Gloster A.S. 31 Survey: A 1930 FAMOUS FLIGHT

Featured Replies

My all-time favorite magazine is the British publication AEROPLANE, and in its March 2000 issue there is a wonderful article about a famous flight in 1930 when Alan Butler delivered a Gloster A.S. 31 Survey to Cape Town in South Africa, flying from Heston near London. All due acknowledgements and credits go to Aeroplane magazine and its staff, who often give us articles of this kind. When I first read this article my immediate reaction was to fly the same route in FS9 or FSGW, but Heston aerodrome is not represented, though some airfields exist near it. The aircraft is also unavailable, so one has to do with something of the same period and similar--your suggestions will be precious here.I also had the idea to make a series of flight plans for the flight, made one, and gave up, as I find that tedious. Someone can take that up and see it through--I am willing to provide whatever other information is needed. Therefore, I decided to scan some pages and post them for you...The map page will give you a clear idea of the route, and the text, if you can read it, will also be informative. There is a diagram of the aircraft, an excellent description of the cockpit and other data which I hope will incite someone to make an FS9 model of the Survey.I intend to post this in other forums also, in an effort to get some developer interested in building the aircraft for us. You could also spread the word and repost these in whatever forums you can, but make sure you acknowledge the magazine in the way I have done above, as is proper and moral. I am very grateful to AEROPLANE for this wonderful information and images.Any feedback or suggestions and ideas are more than welcome.EDIT: You cannot post copyrighted material / images in the AVSIM forums.
