Compression tools and FS

Featured Replies

A thread in the devel forum prompted this posting.Windows does not have the built in ability to extract all types of compressed archives, only things like zip and cab. It is also painfully slow (extract the 38m alaska mesh if you want to see what I mean). Some users of FS may not be aware that there alternative GUI based tools available for use other than those that come with Windows, and some may not realize that you do not have to buy anythign to have full functionality (with the exception of .sit, but thats a rare type in Windows (Mac type). 7Zip or IZArch both have the ability to extract .zip, .cab, .rar, .arj and many ohers. Both are free and 7Zip is open source. As a further bonus, they are both much faster (screaming) than the built-in MS tools, especially on archives with lots of small files like many mega-scenery packs. You can download the tools from my site here:http://www.ascendant-online.net/en/downloads/os.php#zipUse IZArch in win32 (faster - nicer UI) and 7Zip in win64 (shell integration). Both work in Vista, but neither have shell integration as of last testing.CheersShad

I just WinRar - occasionally you'll get a popup asking you to upgrade, but it's generally quick - and the compression is far more superior when compared to WinZip.It does the job.
