July 12, 200619 yr I fly online and there are those times when the controller is not online and I must figure out which runway to use for t/o. How do you go about finding wind data for you airport? I have asv 6 but the wind data is in true headings, not magnetic. Also just to clarify if the wind is at 180 degrees do you use r/w 18 or the opposite? So is the wind blowing toward heading 180 or away?
July 12, 200619 yr Hi Mike,There are a couple of ways to find wind conditions at an airport.1. You can invoke map view and get the ATIS frequency and tune to it.2. I have ASV4.5 and it reports winds in magnetic. Are you sure about ASV6 reporting winds as true?3. You can also to to http://aviationweather.gov/To clarify your direction questions metars always report the direction from which the wind is coming. Therefore in your example the winds are out of the South at 180 degrees and you would select runway 18.Now just to throw a wrinkle into the equation, most airports have prevailing winds. Example is LAX the prevailing winds are out of the Southwest and therefore the prevailing operations are West. However, you may determine that you have winds on a certain day at 120 and 7 knots. You would still select a West runway. This is because airports have parameters that include calm wind conditions which is generally up to 9 knots. Until the wind speed exceeds that the prevailing operations are in effect. The reason for this is it's a major event to change from prevailing operations to non-standard operations. You can go to VATSIM and look at the various ARTCC's and take a look at the SOP's to find out what the prevailing airport operations are for major airports. If it's a small airport then go with the winds if uncontrolled.Hope this helps.
July 12, 200619 yr Thanks for clearing that up and providing much usefull information, but yes asv6 definatly shows the wind as true.
