Blacked-out Beaver and CRJ - a workaround (kind of)

Featured Replies

Hi!Well, I always had these black windshields problems with the Beaver and the CRJ in the FSX demo, as well as untextured taxi signs, vehicles and autogen roofs. And some trees too. I had tried several ways to fix these (at least the cockpits) with no luck. I was told that my card (a geforce FX5200) does not have 2.0 shaders and there was nothing I could do.I was puzzled, because I remember clearly that I upgraded my geForce4 MX440 for this current card exactly because I had a game that required shader 2.0 (Richard Burns Rally), and with the upgrade I got the water reflections in FS2004 too.Anyway... Yesterday I was at a friend's and he fired up FSX demo in his computer. His machine is similar to mine, except for a slightly processor clock difference and he has a GF4 MX440 with only 64mb of VRAM, the same one I had once. To my surprise, FSX worked perfectly - there were not black windows, all building and signs were correctly textured. Performance wasn't exactly good, but it was what I would expect given the difference in power between the two video cards. A little tweaking, autogen off and the sim was very playable. It didn't seem to make much sense to me. How could this much older card (I heard the MX series of GF4's are actually much like GF2's) work OK and mine not?The first thing I tried was the display.cfg file in the FSX root folder. I 'commented out' the "Shader20Plus=0" line in the appropriate section for my card - not without noticing that there seems to be two sections designated for the FX5200 - the first is actually for some other card and the correct was the one just before the FX5200LE. Fired up FSX and... voila! It was working perfectly! Unfortunately, performance was a huge hit: when any of the 'previously buggy' things is on screen, framerates drop considerably. Even when they're not, there's a fps hit too. The biggest performance impact comes when close to the ground (I actually tested only with a runway), must be something with the default textures.Well, if you suffer from this same problem you may want to try this. I don't know if I'll keep my setup this way, my framerates dropped from an acceptable 20-30 to 6-20. If you try, don't forget to backup your display.cfg before doing any modifications.(edit: attachs 1 and 2 are before, 3 and 4 are after mod.)rafa
