iMac Flight Sim

Featured Replies

Geez, I just got settled into one of the new Intel iMacs and piddling with X-Plane, and now I've been seeing the improvements they've made to Flight Sim. I'm absolutely stunned by all of the interactivity and graphics! That said, I suppose I'll probably install Vista on the iMac as dual boot, and play Flight Sim X on it. Couple of questions for speculation:Does anyone think there will be drawbacks from playing with the iMac's graphics card (ATI x1600 with 256MB graphics) with DirectX 10 on Vista? Does anyone think there will be any problems with the widescreen aspect ratio (One of X-Plane's problems is that the panels are limited to 1024x1024 and thus leave scenery hanging off of either side).Gosh, it would be great if Codeweavers or some other such company could make this one run on Mac! Shame Windows users get exclusivity to it...

You'll have to upgrade your video card in order to use DX10. DX10 is a new generation and will require new graphics cards that aren't out yet. Widescreen does stretch the 2d panels a little bit but you get used to it. Everything else is fine in widescreen though.

Everything Alex has said is correct. Clicking buttons on the 2d panel is a little difficult because their hitboxes are actually not located directly where the button is, but once can adjust. The videocard you have is not DX10 compatible. There is no DX10 compatible hardware released (or officially announced yet), but keep an eye on AnandTech. When the NDAs for NVIDIA and ATI drop they'll be one of the first places to post a review of the hardware. Also you'll want a minimum of 2GB of RAM for your system for optimal performance.
