FSX - Polar flights are possible :-)

Featured Replies

Right now I am doing a polar flight from JFK to PEK. I currently just passed over the hump and now started my downward leg into Eastern Russia. No strange anomalies reported with FSX in these regions. How does it look? Well not much to see and not much texture detail. Not much weather either and a whole lot of white. Sky looks a bit funky as well. The FSX Flight log shows the distance as 5,925nm and a total flight time of 11::58. Not bad for a JFK-PEK flight thanks to the polar routing. You could almost do it in DC-10-30 if you wanted. Here is some screen shots linked....http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b195/lon...7/Northpole.jpghttp://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b195/lon...Northpolep2.jpg

Here's some screenies from a FS9 polar test flight. I rammed the polar wall at 89.30 and it stopped the airplane dead in it's tracks. The fog in front of the airplane are the contrails drifting past the airplane. I had to roll off the wall and fly parallel until I was able to capture my Lnav route coming out the other side. I think that trough out there is the edge of FS9 flat/tubed earth. What was your highest latitude in FSX. Were you able to successfully nav to a 90.00 latitude? http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155653.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155655.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155656.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155658.txthttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155660.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155661.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155662.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155663.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155664.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/155665.jpg

I am not sure how high I got as I was away from my computer at that point. However I linked a photo showing the highest point. The map function in FSX is still flat. However if you look at it on a globe its right over the pole. Not exactly over the northern most spot but way up there. One anomaly I experienced was the compass was sort of bouncing around a bit and the HSI was moving around a bit. However it quickly went away after starting my downward leg. I believe these sort of anomalies occur for real when flying in the north pole or at least similar. I know the magnetic field up there does wierd things. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b195/longhaul747/map.jpg

Yea, we really can't tell. I'm assuming that none of the default MSFS airplanes have actual Lnav capability. Don't really know. Maybe we'll just have to wait till we get some of the more serious addons on board. Let's just hope that FSX will be able to take advantage of the capabilities that these recient addons have made available. In other words, will FSX be PMDG qualified? Let's hope so.
