Sight Draw Distance Slider?

Featured Replies

Ok, I guess I missed this being mentioned. So what happended to the sight distance slider? How do you adjust visibility distance in FSX?Regards,SD

Level of Detail Radius slider I believe.

The max visibility setting hasn't existed since FS2002 (regrettably). The render distance setting however *was* in FS9, but is not applicable to FSX because of the completely different way in which this version renders the earth. Since it is now possible to go up to space and see the earth as a sphere, a render distance slider would potentially cause portions of the sphere to not be visible from high altitude.

So how does one adjust for visibility in FSX?I thought the sight distance slider in FS9 would allow you to set maximum visibility. In the southeast U.S., during the summer, you might want to set it at fifteen miles. In cool clear air such as the desert southwest, probably much higher. So how are we to do that in FSX? Is it now a function of the weather generator (built in or external)? I understand your point, but go up into space? FSX is a "flight" simulator is it not? Maybe there should be an internal feature that would turn off visibility limitations once you leave earth's atmosphere, say at around fifty-thousand feet. Regards,SD

Just go to customised weather and you can set visibility as a generic, or even create visibility layers. I haven;t experimented with these yet like I did in FS9 but you ought to be able to create a 20 mile vis limit at ground level to 3,000 feet and unlimited at 100,000 ft to suit all needsAllcott

Hello everybody,I think the sight draw distance could be a problem. At FL300 you can see up to 150 miles, for the cloud draw distance you can only set a value of max 110 miles. That's why you can see the end of the cloud drawing.I tried to manually set the visibility in the weather options to 5 miles but at FL300 e.g. it seems to have no effect. You can see it at this picture:clouddistancesy8.jpgPatric

It is a common misconception that sight distance is the same thing as max visibility.Visibility implies that there is a soft limitation to how far you can see before particles or moisture in the air start washing out terrain and objects in the distance. The sight distance was simply a feature that told the game to abruptly clip any terrain beyond a certain distance, often resulting in an abrupt line between the ground and the sky. Personally I hated that feature. In the past two versions however, if one wants to set the maximum visibility (permanently instead of for a single game session) one must rely on third party software (I personally use ActiveSky) and set it there.
