October 26, 200619 yr So, I've read that there is a tab in Windows XP somewhere in the sound configuration that allows you to set a soundcard as voice only. This will cause FSX to route all the ATC chatter to your headset, while the rest of the sounds go through your speakers.Alas, I am running Vista and have been unable to figure out how to do this under Vista. Has anyone else figured out where to set this in Vista?
October 26, 200619 yr Just to make sure, this feature requires two soundcards: one where your speakers are connected and one where the headset's plugged in. USB headsets work as if they were secondary soundcards so that works too.I can't say where the setting is on Vista, but in XP I believe it's under Sounds and Audio Devices. You could try looking for it in a similar location:http://www.puonti.net/stuff/sound.gifI've never used this myself, but I'm not sure if FSX's ATC chatter ranks as "voice". Even if it's a human voice talking it's still made out of WAVE files like for example engine sounds. It could be that FSX tells the OS it's "voice" like VOIP is, though.EDIT:After posting this message I figured I wouldn't lose anything by trying it out for myself so I digged up my headset's USB block. When I bought my headset I decided against using the USB connector on it because it turned out the microphone's voice quality was really bad when plugged in through USB. It sounded like the voice had been severely compressed. This time around, though, the recorded voice quality was just perfect! I'm not sure what has changed since the last time I tried it and now, but I can't find anything wrong with it anymore. Good thing I decided to try this trick out :)Pleasantly surprised by this, I proceeded to select my USB headset in the two dropdown menus in the panel shown in the above screenshot AS WELL AS in the Voice Recording dropdown menu in the "Audio" tab. Fired up FSX and sure enough, ATC was coming through the headset and engine sounds through the speakers connected to my Audigy. Very nice. So, if nothing else, I can confirm that this trick works with FSX's ATC. It does not appear to work in FS9.
October 26, 200619 yr Yeah, this is the basic information I had before (except I hadn't seen a screenshot), but in Vista the dialogs for sound are very different and there is no tab for voice. :(
October 26, 200619 yr You can revert Vista to "old Windows NT" -style looks where I imagine the dialogs look more or less like what's in the screenshot. If I were you I'd do that, see if the Voice tab is to be found and if it is change the settings, then go back to Vista's own UI :)
