August 29, 20205 yr I was under the impression that the new flight model was fairly extensive. However, I loaded the C172 on a runway and set custom ground wind to 60KTS and noticed the airspeed indicator was still showing zero and when I moved the elevators nothing happened. In real life the airspeed should have read close to 60KTS and I would have been able to, at the very least lift the nose off the ground. I actually think I tried to do that in FSX/P3D a long time ago and it worked, I can't verify because I don't have them installed anymore. Then I tried to increase the wind to 100KTS and this time there was a little "wobbling" around when I moved the controls, I was actually able to lift the nose off the ground, but that's it. It felt like my mains were glued to the ground as my tail just kept smashing onto the runway. Then slowly I started to roll backwards on the runway, if I moved the rudder I could actually steer myself rolling backwards. I kept trying to get the airplane to lift off the ground until suddenly...CTD. I've been running the sim since day one and never experienced a CTD until that moment. Random exercise to share here, but interesting I thought. The interaction of the aircraft with the atmosphere on the ground vs. the airborne needs to be looked at as well. Esteban J. August 29, 20205 yr Strange.. there is a well known video by squirrel showing taking off in place with strong headwind. I'm unsure if it was still the preview release or the public one Marco Manieri Perugia - Italy
August 29, 20205 yr Author I tried again and managed to do it at 150kts. So I suppose its possible, just hard for me to believe it takes 100kts+ winds to lift a C172 off the ground. 😆 Esteban J.
