A Live Wx surprise

Featured Replies

I haven't used the Live Wx mode much yet. Actually, I don't have much time on the sim yet. Early bugs made things so annoying, I just decided to be patient and wait for some updates. Last night I booted up a short PM flight in the 172 G1000 from John Wayne (where I took my first flight lessons back in the early seventies), to LAX. For 30 years I was a stick-and-rudder low-N-slow VFR flyer - really not wanting to go anywhere in small aircraft - and mostly flying my own home-built Experimentals. But with the advent of FS2020 and glass cockpits I am finding it engaging to use the autopilot and enjoy the view. On this simple flight I was basically getting practice with Glass panel ops, which have really been hit-and-miss to date, and testing for other improvements since the last update (there do seem to be some perceptible ones). I chose this area because I spent 20 years here in my early life and knew a night flight here would be pretty engaging, with lots of lights and activity. What I WASN'T expecting, was to look down from 2900" cruise and see the mass of shifting smoke layering the landscape from all the fires! I had wondered if the fires would make any appearance in the sim using Live Wx. Absolutely! Over about a 40 minute period I flew the scenario 3 times (practice makes perfect). Amazingly, on each flight the smoke patterns and densities had shifted and changed. Visibility down through the layers varied from severe clear to complete obscuration of the terrain. I was truly impressed. Just prior to doing these flights I had been standing outside, absorbing the last official night of summer - including a stunning young Moon. Lo-and-behold, on my last sim flight the smoke layers had lowered and retreated inland, revealing the colorful bustle and lighting of L.A. below, and I looked up over the ocean to the West, to see the very same Moon I had just been looking at minutes earlier in my New Mexico yard. (I got a screenshot, but probably because I'm a Noob on this server I wasn't allowed to upload it)  So people...in spite of some real frustration so far, I think there's some serious potential here. Hang in there.
