GNS 430 (non WAAS)

Featured Replies

Is it possible to use this plugin to simulate GNS 430 without WAAS option? I understand the benefits of WAAS but I fly with non-WAAS version and I’m interested to learn using it. To be honest, I don’t know the difference between WAAS and nonWAAS version in terms of functionality so it might be negligible.

Thanks, Dominik

WAAS or non-WAAS (or better said without SBAS) is a major difference in what you can do with it, see figure on page 133 of the PBN Manual v3.0.v11

Without SBAS (WAAS, EGNOS etc) you do not have LNAV capbilities, only ENR, TERM and APR. So also no vertical guidance.

You can switch off SBAS via an AUX menu.  That is different than simulating an SBAS failure. With SBAS failure a certain type of approach might degrade to a lower level e.g. LNAV/VNAV to LNAV. Without SBAS you do not have LNAV at all.

Effectively a non-WAAS 430/530 is not really suitable for IFR PBN operations. As you do not know the difference between WAAS and non-WAAS I would recommend to follow a good PBN training before you excercise the use of the 530/430 navigation capablities in a real aircraft under IFR.

In EASA countries it is mandatory to have followed such a training, both theoretical and practical, before allowed to use it. Even a DCT with a GPS under IFR can be considered a PBN operation for which such a training is required.
