GPS problems with 296 unit. :-(

I have a flight plan, loaded with numerous legs (tons of doglegging around various mountain passes). I want to start a flight - slew to a specific point, then update the gps to activate the current waypoint/leg. The learning center details exactly how to do this. Only problem is --- it doesn't work!!In the GPS 500, you are to cursor to the desired waypoint, hit 'menu' then 'activate' in the pop up window. The GPS 296 doesn't have a 'menu' button, so the instructions say click on the 'direct to' button twice. However, this does not work - it brings up a different screen, with an input area for airport identifyers, but has nothing to do with my flight plan.HOw do you do this in aircraft that only have the 296? Alternatively, how do you activate the 500 on all aircraft?

Ok, figured out how to get the 500 instead of the 295 working, but still wish the 295 would work as advertised. It is more believable a gps in the Trike!!
