May 21, 200719 yr I am sort of new to trying to navigate and am having a hard time using intersections in the game. I understand how to use VOR and NDB's but it seems like trying to use the in-game map via low altitude airways and intersections are pointless? Either that or I am missing something crucial? The in game map gives a nav-log page when you file a flight plan but it just gives bearings and flight times. How do you relly know you are over the top of an intersection out in the middle of nowhere? I understand how to switch channels on VOR to confirm my position over an intersection when I know the bearing to two stations but I'm still looking for a way to navigate smarter over open country.Do you guys use nav charts and do they help? I found the in-game map to be disapointing.TIA,Blaze
May 21, 200719 yr The easiest solution would be using the GPS... Nowadays using the GPS isn't cheating anymore. ;) I never ever use the ingame map (also because the sim is paused and you 'leave' the sim, which doens't feel realistic). I use the GPS for all the info I need (like ILS frequencies and so on, and all other stuff you would use the ingame map for in the pre-GPS days). The FS GPS is more sophisticated than more people know. It's not just a moving map, it contains all the info you need about airports (maps, all frequencies, etc. etc. etc.) You do not have to use the GPS as a main guidance system (slaving it to the AP): you can also just use it to get the info you need. Usually I fly with the Cessna 172 and navigate on my own or I let ATC guide me. In that case I only use the GPS to search for ILS-frequencies. When I'm flying with ATC I quite often use the GPS to get frequencies of VOR's (for the VOR2) and NDB's to lock on to, but just for fun, to see those needles moving. You got to keep yourself busy on some longer flights. ;)
