Texture mapping

I am new to plane modellling and I have a question about texture mapping in FSDS.I know how to paint 1 part at a time. I am building a plane with many parts and I would like to decrease the number of Bitmaps I use. I know how to paint multiple parts in FSDS but I see many bitmaps on FS models that will include parts that when viewed from any perspective, that part would be covered by another part. I guess what I am looking for is a way to include many seperate parts on one bitmap.Any advice will do.Thanks
