engage hdg

Hi!Where/what do I change to stop having both hdg and alt on the mcp going to it's present heading and altitude when engaged? Ie. I would like to preset the heading when I'm flying on a gps track and have it engaged when I press hdg. If I do that now it goes back to present heading.
