December 19, 200520 yr Hello,I thought, I will write some brief thoughts down, about OGC WMS (WebMapServer) request:(http://www.opengeospatial.org/)See Arnos article:http://www.scenerydesign.org/blog/article/...projection-####I am searching since a long time for a freeware tool can do this very easy. But could not found any, doing a request and allowing the user to define the request area, and allowing the definition of the downloaded cell size.So the user can request, and get a raster dataset to his disk and can disconnect and work with it. Something like USPhotoMap.Maybe some know one, or the way to do it. However. But there are some viewer, they are very helpful sometimes, I think. Most of the server supporting the SRSEPSG:4326, this is the data in lat/lon WGS84.This is important to get correct raster or vector data for FS.First tool: Gaia 2http://www.thecarbonproject.com/products/gaia.html(free with free registration)Short steps:A) Have a look to this server list:http://www.skylab-mobilesystems.com/ger/wms_serverlist.html:( copy the linkC) paste the link in Gaia /Server (most are Version 1.1.1)D) Have a look to the data layer and the infoE) Then to options to make sure you are using EPSG:4326F) Add the layer; you want to see, to the mapG) Zoom in the resolution you think it is usable, to use the data laterH) Save the layer (right mouse, layers)I) You will get a raster image and the boundaries (meta), you can use to set them up in scenery toolsJ) If you can also request the features you can save them to GDL or XMLSecond is GIDB 2 Client (US Navy):http://columbo.nrlssc.navy.mil/dmap/gidb2/thick_client.jspYou can save also your screen to raster and the features to an Esri shapefileHere is the GIDB list:http://columbo.nrlssc.navy.mil/ogcwms/servlet/WMSServlet?Please read the FAQ, help and all the stuff on the link sites.Of course, you also can save the map you have created, with a lot of different layers. This is what the tools are for. :)Another tool:http://udig.refractions.net/confluence/display/UDIG/Home(but I am not very familiar to this right now)You can use tools like this for:a) Creating a map:( Have a look to data and then search, where you can get the
