Luxor beam effect.

I am trying improve the beam on top of the Luxor in Las Vegas. I have successfully made it taller. About 3 times as high as it was, it is now about 32,000 feet give or take. I am thinking of making it about 40,000 feetNow what I want to do is make it viewable form further away. The problem is it seems as if it is linked to the Luxor because If the Luxor is not in view the beam disappears. Like if I am just trying to view the beam (looking up) and the Luxor goes below the screen the beam disappears. This creates another problem when I fly out of vegas the buildings disappears as I get far away as does the beam. I want the beam to be visible from around 100 miles away.Any help from someone who knows about .fx files would be great. :)
