Built in the thirties, and still the largest hanger in the world created for the great dirigibles, Moffet Hanger Number 1 in Flight Unlimited may soon be the only place you can fly around this elaborate feat of construction.The toxic chemical PCB has been found in the hanger area in quantities enough to cause a "health concern," and one of the three options is to dismantle the hangar. The third option may cause it to become structurally unsound...leading to option one again. Considering all the political flak Moffet has come under since closing down, politicians may find this a good excuse to do a little "remodeling" of the area.Public outcry is expected to be loud, if they need to take the hangar down, but considering the attention span of the public, I do not put a lot of faith in it. That, and the fact that Moffet sits in the heart of Silicon Valley which has replaced old pilots with new DotCom captains, may forget the history.Well, cooler heads may yet previal. But, perhaps, it is time to take a slow virtual flight around the mammoth hangar, for this is the only place you will be able to see it.Other than in old photos.
