Yelled after holding pattern

Featured Replies

Hi,Today on a flight from Singapore to Hong Kong, I had the "incredible luck" to be asked to enter a holding pattern. After almost 90 minutes flying in circles, the ATC extended the hold yet another time, and I decided I better start getting down, or I wouldn't have fuel to make it to the alternate in case of a missed approach. Consequently I declared minimum fuel and got cleared for a direct approach.Safely on the ground I aks for flight critique, and I'm told that I'm a terrible pilot, since I didn't include fuel for at least a 45 minute delay :-D Hmm, I had only been up there for almost twice as long burning almost 25000 lbs of fuel (B747). That's quite hard to plan for ;-)Anyway, on to my real question: this was the first time, I have been asked to enter a holding pattern due to weather. Is it normal to be kept in the pattern for so long? Or does it sound like I did something wrong (ATC didn't yield at me at all, except when I tried to start a descend to test whether I was supposed to do that)?/ JesperEdit: Spelling

I did the holding pattern by asking the FMC to perform 20 nm legs (the distance I chose) starting from 40 nm before the appropriate VOR. The pattern looked correctly, but maybe another time I should just ask the FMC to do 21 nm or so just be sure that ATC is satisfied. And with respect to the critique: I know when it's appropriate and when it's not, so it's not like I'm taking it too seriously - just thought the comment was a bit funny given the circumstances./ Jesper
