  1. Once again, I will repeat, for the third time....fists, hammers, clubs, baseball bats..etc. were not designed to kill people. They have a passive primary use that can be morphed into a weapon by a deranged individual. An automobile was not designed to kill, it is designed for transportation.

    A civilian or military assault weapon is designed to kill as many people as possible, in the shortest time possible. They have no other use.

     

    I do see your point however, guns weren't "designed" for mass shooting of people or young kids. Murder isn't breed into a piece of metal and lead. It takes the choice of a HUMAN to commit the crime with whatever tool he chooses. A gun can be used for target shooting, hunting, confidence, home defense, or common good (if you carry at all times). It amazes me how the many "good samaritian" stories of people saved by having a gun are not broadcasted with as much emphasis as the rare horrific ones.


  2. The second amendment is about Federalism. It does not create an individual right.

     

    And yes, you are supporting the murder of little children. What happened at Sandy Hook, and Aurora, and Columbine, and all of those other places where deranged gunmen killed scores of innocent people is the fault of people like you who place their own desire to play with toys above the safety and well being of others.

     

    This comment is not appreciated. I am a gun owner, not a deranged gunman. Please state your own opinion without bashing others for theirs. Thanks.


  3. I am pleasantly shocked and surprised that we have been able to discuss both sides of this issue. I never thought this topic would have reached almost 3,000 views and so many responses. Although people may or may not have changed their points, it is very interesting to read the comments so far. Thank you MODS for allowing the discussion to take place. I realize that this may not be related to AV Simming. We all are real people even if we are virtual pilots. I hope that we can at the end of the day not take our personal feelings out and enjoy simming as always. I do appreciate the viewpoints of everyone, Americans and other countries, as we see this issue raised to the United States government. May God bless and guide their decision for our future, whatever it may be.


  4. The founding fathers ensured that private citizens had the same kind of weaponry as the King's soldiers in their time. I think there's still a compelling interest in the same sort of parity--a people that wants to remain free should not think it wise to endow their government with weapons while allowing their government to deny the same to themselves. I think it was Thomas Jefferson that said "those who turn their swords into plowshares will soon find themselves plowing for those who do not."

  5. I hope when the feds come for all the guns, enough state and city governors and people refuse and states secede if necessary. Which would include military bases and such. So a seceding state against the fed takeover could have a bunch of Apache's and F35's and bases as was mentioned. If all else fails of the three branches...

     

    I honestly hope we never see this day, but I agree that something will happen if we are criminalized due to what gun or magazines we own or would like to own.

    Such early successes made Robert E. Lee a leading candidate to command Union forces against the South once it decided to secede. Reluctant to engage in a war against the South, Lee turned down an offer of command of the Union forces. On April 18, 1861, the Virginia Secession Convention, made up of the state's ruling elite, voted to join the Southern states in secession. As practical issues, Lee did not oppose either slavery or secession. Although he felt slavery in the abstract was a bad thing, he blamed the national conflict on abolitionists, and accepted the pro-slavery policies of the Confederacy. He chose to fight to defend his homeland.

     

    He resigned from the army he had served for 36 years, and accepted the command of Virginia's forces.

  10. From all the info I have read her son left HS after the school expressed concerns over his mental state. Rather than get immediate help she did want any parent might do and take time to review all options.

     

    Alleged Aurora, Colo, shooter James Holmes met with not one, but at least three mental health professionals at the University of Colorado prior to the massacre. How long he met with each one and the depth of their involvement is not clear, but it adds to the picture of Holmes being clearly on their radar in the time period leading up to the shootings.

     

    Seems there is a pattern here.

     

    We, as a society, have become so detached from each other that we no longer care for the fellow man. Take a minute to check up on that person who seems "out of it", you may be doing more than just wasting your breath.


  11. I just don't see how people can take certain parts of the constitution these days still literal and not think as to how it applies now as opposed then.

     

    You in favor honestly think that it is and was designed to allow you to own a automatic assault rifle with large mags just because?

     

    Looking back at the time it was written I see certain parts that need to be take out and or completely rewritten. The right to bear arms is the first one I would start with.

     

    People should have to jump through hoops and have to go through detailed and extensive checks for owning and walking around with firearms.

     

    I see no real rational reason why Joe Blow next door should be able to have a small arsenal in His garage. There is simple no need on this earth for that type of rationality. None.

     

    If there was a coherent argument to be able to have machine guns and the such that people sell now, with large mags/clips whatever I sure would like to hear it other than "the constitution" says so.

  12. What I would like to see is an amendment that more clearly defines "gun rights" in the 21st century, given the absolute mess we find ourselves in -- 300 million guns and 11,000 gun deaths per year.

     

    Allow me to clarify your post... In 2010, drunken drivers killed 13,000 people. According to the CDC there were 10,400 firearm homicides in our country. Reviewing the statistics, we find that the majority of these gun-related deaths were criminal on criminal violence or justified police shootings, not innocent people killed as is the case of a death by a DUI.

     

    Interesting, huh?


  13. There is a Constitutional mechanism for modifying the Constitution: it's called Amendments. It's been done 27 times since 1891.

     

    You are correct. That line I need to revise in my next letter to better define what should be done. Thanks for pointing that out.

     

    Gun ownership is a responsibility and tragedies occur when you violate that responsibility.

     

    However... the two semiautomatic pistols and .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle Lanza used in the shooting were registered to his mother. No regulation could have prevented this.

  14. First of all, if you're writing a letter to a Congressperson, address it to them by name and official title. It makes it look less like it's something you found online.

     

    I agree. I am in fact sending this letter to every Virginia Congressman, by name. The post does not contain the personnal letter that I sent to every person. I plan on sending these letters every week, so although they may not see it initally, the chances they see it will be high. Thanks for the advice for the future though.


  15. Assault rifles and large ammo clips didn't exist and weren't even contemplated when the 2nd Amendment was drafted. So it certainly wasn't drafted with the objective of protecting the rights of citizens to own them. The right to bear arms was a concept of its time and was drafted with the weapons of that time in mind.

     

    I strongly disagree, but let's take a look at a case that was brought up in 1939:

     

    In United States v. Miller, the U.S. Supreme Court noted that the Second Amendment protected an individual's right to own guns that could be used for the “common defense.” Specifically, the Supreme Court said that “ordinarily when called for service (men in the militia) were expected to appear bearing arms supplied by themselves and of the kind in common use at the time.”

     

    Common for infantry at the time were muskets. Common for infantry in our time is the AR-15, a civilian version of the Army’s M-16.


  16. When gun laws or lack thereof other than just bearing arms, are put ahead of the safety of children, something has to be done.

    Assault weapons are an offensive weapon. Im sure the constitution as was written umteen years ago didnt intent people to own mass assault weapons which were soley designed to kill and maim in the greatest and fastest way possible. There is nothing about it thats says defend.

     

    If my kid cant go to school or a movie theater without the fear of wondering if he will be shot, wait not just shot, riddled with bullet holes from an assault rifle, then there should be change. Surely childrens and everyones life is more important that owning a weapon that aims to kill as many as possible.

    Living in Canada I would not expect you to fully understand my post. Even so I welcome the discussion. I choose to conceal carry when I go with my wife and child to the movie theater and I guarantee that if I were in the theater at that time the tradegy would have been significantly different.
