  1. JD-Slow-Thumbs, BuildLog For Helicopter Collective On YouTube

I made a simplified Helicopter Collective for use with flight simulators like MS-FSX. I made it by splicing into a joystick. Works pretty good.
I am negotiating to Distribute Kits of the key coponents (for more advanced versions of course).

    Thanks for reading,
    JD

  2. I am considering the following:

    .

    A set of Saitek, Radio-Panel-PZ69 and Multi-Panel-PZ70 for $304,
    OR
    VRInsight GPS-5 for $400, or
    EmuTeq GarSim GNS-530 for £465

    .

Is there enough overlap in features / functionality that I can get just a GNS-5xx
or would I still need to get a radio and autopilot?

    .

I anticipate using  them for hopping to the next VOR beacon and to the next airport,
and autopilot to hold bearing and altitude while I look around and figure out where to go next.

    .

Would I promptly outgrow just a GNS-5xx and want a radio to talk to people (like VATSIM)?

    .

    Thanks in advance,

    JD

  3. Thanks for the clarification on "REX4 Texture Direct".

While looking around on the PC Aviator store I noticed ASN was having a 30% off sale so I bought it to give it a try.  I only had time to fly with it for about two minutes, at first I thought that my frame-rate was stuttering, but after checking the fps number in the corner and noticing the airspeed indicator fluctuating, I now think that the plane was getting tossed around in some gusty winds.

  4. Hello All, I finally have a nice game-machine, but it is still far from great. And I am looking to improve the Sky/Weather, without excessive impact to my frame-rate. Are there “choices of technologies” / categories of technologies that apply to this question? Should I spend more time fiddling with the built in ms-fsx? Is there a payware that makes this easy?

Keeping my frame-rate high is more important than eye-candy, but I want to improve the eye-candy if I can.

    Thanks in advance.

    JD

    ***** system specs *****

Making compromises of course but I am getting approximately 48fps using ...

    Intel Core i3-4130 CPU @ 3.40GHz (only dual-core)

(PassMark - CPU Mark Single Thread Performance = 1,978 )

    GeForce GTX 750 Ti with 2GB GDDR5 / HDTV @ 1920x1080p (32 inch)

    (PassMark - Average G3D Mark = 3687)

  5. IMHO a Game-Controller should be able to meet the needs of a beginner flying with old-school stick and rudder, single engine, look out the front windshield to see where you are going VFR (visual flight rules), and combat flight sims.

Yes, you are right, a game-controller is not meant for flying an airliner. When they graduate to; navigation to VOR's, navigation by GPS, auto-pilot to heading and altitude, and multi-engine, and propeller pitch adjustments, (and don't forget to prime the engine and adjust the mixture, things that are not even allowed in modern passenger cars). Yeah, when they graduate, then they will need to buy into a more serious system.

Sorry, I had an opinion that just had to get out :)

First of all, it's all fine and dandy to suggest "searching" as a first step in anyone's quest for answers. However, that presupposes two conditions, (1) that one knows how to frame their question(s) precisely, and (2) that they know how to generate the "keywords" required to even begin their "search."
    ***** CloseQuote

This bit about just asking a question in a way that can be answered,

it is very important, and not to be taken for granted in a world that has gone from books, to magazine articles, to facebook entries, to tweets, to text messages.

A while ago I asked a question "Noob Seeking Fast Single",
and received several good answers (many suggesting the RealAir Lancair Legacy),
but I knew that "fast" and "single" would be worthless as keywords to a search engine :)

Also, when somebody asks what is the hotest plane for VFR / IFR / ATC / CrossCountry / etc...
This years answer might be different from the "answer" from ten years ago.

On the flipside of this discussion...
If somebody describes a "Crash To Desktop" maybe they should spend ten minutes looking around the site to see if it is a major topic of discussion.

Mea Culpa, yes, even I have asked a dumb question "Cliffnotes for G-1000" and got told that it came packaged with FSX in the learning topics, oops ;)

Just a small and late contribution

  7. I have seen the "Thrustmaster MFD Cougar Pack", and keep wondering if they are big enough to simulate a pair of Garmin?

They are a pair of square bezels with five buttons on each side and a rocker switch in each corner making for twenty buttons and four switches per bezel.  Sounds good so far, but, they are only 5.5in x 5.5in (141mm) square on the outside and only 4.25 x 4.25in (108mm) square on the inside.

I do not see how they can be big enough to simulate a Garmin.
What do you guys use them for?
(and are any windows-pop-ups or android-apps already published?)

    Thanks in advance.
    JD

P.S. I already did a search and found very little buzz about them.

  8. Hello, I want to flight-sim fly a plane that might be considered a modern motor-glider; light weight, long wings, small-ish motor preferably Rotax, and I am still looking for steam gauges featuring the standard / classic six-pack of instruments. I have not found a freeware add-on that I am happy with, so now I am looking for a payware add-on.

Of the following which is the best choice?

H36 Dimona from Aerosoft for $26.95

    DA-20 Katana X from Aerosoft for $24.99

Diamond DA20-100 Katana 4X from Aerosoft for $29.95

Diamond Katana DA20-C1 from WS Simulation for $15.00

IRIS - Aviator Series Venture MG.1 [FSX] from Iris for $31.95 "inspired by the Grob 109B"

    Thanks for your time

  9. The Microsoft-default Cessna 172 Skyhawk has a very good 2D "IFR" panel that is easy to move around and only has the instruments without showing a black windshield.  I have seen this used in several hybrid simulators half video monitor and half hard controls from either Saitek or GoFlight or whoever.  This rectangular shape works great on a separate screen, I have also seen a few semi-circular 2D panels for single wide trainers.  Try searching this site and other sites for "2D widescreen panel" I know there are a couple more out there.

    Good luck

    JD

  10. Hi, I recently tried flying through a canyon in my plane, and thought that it was good fun and a good way to learn how to maneuver the plane. Surely I am not the first one to think of this  ... so now I am looking for more canyons / valleys to practice maneuvering in.

    Nice to have:

    Airport nearby to take-off from,

    Highway or River to follow,

“V” shaped instead of “U” shaped,

Easy-wide, and moderate, (it will be a while before I get to the narrow-hard ones).

The only one that I have tried so far is Interstate-5 north from KVNY through the Newhall pass (starting at the I-5 and CA-14 split) using a Cessna-172 and a Lancair-Legacy.

    Thanks in advance

    JD

  11. Thanks to all of the votes for the RealAir Lancair Legacy,

I am revisiting the freeware “FSX Emerald Legacy” that I found earlier, for me it was almost impossible to trim, so I went looking for a parameter to adjust and found “elevator_trim_effectiveness” and changed it from 1.3 to 0.1 and now it is tolerable to fly even fun to fly :)

With all of the recommendations for the RealAir brand I will try out their offering pretty soon.

Thanks and keep those suggestions coming

    JD

The Pilatus-P-12 has also been added to my list.

The T-28-Trojan and P-51-Mustang also sound fast and fun, but these are for a different quest.

  12. Hello,

I am looking for recommendations for:

    fast + single-engine-propeller + side-by-side-seating + civilian + easy-on-frame-rate

fast - well over 200 mph closer to 300 mph please

GA / Light-Commercial side-by-side instead of military fighter / trainer

I have a modest system and need something that will have lower impact on frame-rates.

I already received one suggestion for the Carenado Malibu 350P, I am hoping to receive several suggestions.

    Thanks in advance

    JD

  13. I am interested in getting a “fast-single”, and since I have a modest system, I find myself asking for a product with low impact on my system or at least less unnecessary demands on my system. For a TBM-850 which will have the better frame-rate, Carenado or Wilco?

Should I also be looking at the Carenado “Piper Malibu PA46T Jetprop HD Series FSX”
( Is the much difference between a TBM vs a JetProp? )

    My system is as follows:
    / i3-4130 CPU @ 3.40GHz (dual-core) / 8-GB RAM @ 1,600 MHz / PNY/NVidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti with 2GB GDDR5 / HDTV @ 1920x1080p / FSX

I have already tried the freeware “FSX Socata TBM 700 Package” without much success.

    Thanks in advance
    JD

  14. I now have FSX and the Default “Current Location” is Friday Harbor.

Was there a version of FS that had the Default Current Location in Hawaii ?

    What version was it?

And is it near an FSX Airport so that I can re-create the scenario?

    Thanks in advance

    JD

  15. Work-Arounds For Copy/Paste

Thanks n4gix for the pointer about "BBCode Mode",
Thanks Tom Allensworth for the pointer about ctrl-c/ctrl-v vs right-mouse-button.

Regarding cookies, I use two browsers:

I use FireFox for over ninety percent of my general browsing, and I have it very restricted in an attempt to keep out the bad stuff.

I try to reserve MS Internet Explorer for business transactions. I usually try to look through the catalog first using firefox then switch over to MS-IE to do the purchase transaction.

    Sincerely
    JD

  16. Hello AVSim,

I am new to Flight Simming and I love your site,

and I especially respect the fact that you are the biggest,

I am sure there are some good reasons that you are the biggest,

but I have a couple of minor beefs.

I can not use Mozilla-Firefox with cookies turned off,

I have to use MS Internet Explorer with cookies turned on,

I mean your competitors do not have this requirement.

    When Posting/Starting-A-Thread,

    I put 15-20 minutes into word-smithing / spell-checking my post,

and I can not copy/paste into the post-form,

    what gives?!

The above copy/paste issue just now caused me to post a question at a competing forum instead of here.

    Sincerely

    JD
