Fried Computers...!

Featured Replies

Hi all...Sorry for posting this off-topic question, but I know I'm in good company with this one and maybe someone can give me some advice. This afternoon, about 10NM west of EIDW, I experienced one of the most frightening thunder storms I have ever seen. Unfortunately when I returned home I found I was not the only one to have had the **** scared out of me! My main computer (the one I use for simming) wouldn't start :-halo Sound familiar, anyone? :-)A fair old current must have come down my phone line as one of the chips on my modem had its plastic top blown clean off. The computer doesn't even get as far as issuing POST failure beeps; the power light comes on, disks whirr for a few moments (lights flashing on and off) and then it shuts itself down again. A week ago, for once in my whole life, I made a full backup... almost make you believe in premonition! So, my question to those that have been there before me is this: I don't need to be told that my mainboard is gone; that much is pretty clear, but in your experience is it likely that anything else has survived, or am I just as well to throw the whole lot out and buy a new computer? Many thanks for your help and your patience,Chris Kirk...Oh crap... this computer isn't going to be fast enough for FS9/737TNG. Might as well just go to bed! :-grr

Hi Gosta,Thanks, I appreciate your help. Unfortunately I don't think it's as simple as a blown PSU. The power light comes on, the PSU fan turns, the Tx/Rx LED's on my NIC come on, the LED's on my CD/DVD drives come on. BUT... there is no RGB output to my monitor, the hard drive does not spin up, the main board POST diagnostic LED's on the back of the PC stay dark and the machine shuts itself off after about 20 seconds. All that being said, I will take your advice and investigate further... still, if the worst comes to the worst at least I can console myself with the thought that it's easier to persuade "the other half" that a dead computer needs replacing than an ageing computer needs replacing!:-saeChris Kirk

Hi Chris, that's exactly what happened to my PSU, it did supply some power to the drives etc, but not enough, or wrong voltage, or whatever to the rest of the computer. I just didn't bother to investigate it any further - I put in an old PS, the computer booted up, so I went out and bought a new, more powerful one (which I wanted anyway, I just needed an excuse... :)).Cheers,Gosta.http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg
