Loving the 737NG

Featured Replies

I think this aircraft is absolutely terrific. I just purchased it this morning, and as you can imagine, I am swimming through the manuals, including Tim Metzinger's tutorial. I flew a quick trip from Kelowna BC to Abbotsford BC, a trip that I was barely ready for. I was about a hundred miles behind the aircraft! I was relying primarily on my knowledge of the 767PIC program. I did not run into any real problems, but I do have questions. I am reading the forum archives as much as I can, and must admit, I have not yet finished all of the PMDG manuals. I'd still like to post these questions, as I feel this forum is one of the best ways to learn quickly.1) Why is the FMC indicating "TRUE" winds? I notice a 20 degree error, which is consistent with the 20 degree magnetic variation for the route I flew.2) Drag required? Am I really supposed to stick the speed brakes out at FL200 and 295kts?3) Aside from Tim Metzinger's excellent tutorial, is there a place I can go to get a more indepth explanation of the pneumatic ducts, PACKS, APU, generators, etc? I would also like to go a little more indepth with the FMC. Any good sources, other than the Aircraft Operating Manual?4) Why did the aircraft maintain a 250KT climb speed for the entire climb to FL260? On the Climb page, the only restriction is 250KTS below 10,000.5) My framerates are horrible. Not necessarily due to 737NG. I have recently purchased FS9, reformatted the hard drive, and bought an FX5200 video card, so I'm not sure which of these are the cause of my low framerates. I am looking for easy tweaks to improve my framerates. Thanks,Capherc

Hi Capherc,Isn't she lovely? ;-)I'll try to answer your questions raised.1) Think this has changed in SU2 (service Update 2) due any day.2) If your in VNAV PATH DES and the speed exceeds the target speed set on the DES page with more than 10(?) knots. You will get a DRAG REQUIRED message. If you exceed TGT SPD +20 knots VNAV will disconnect. The whole PATH DES is refined in SU2. Giving a DRAG REQUIRED message at TGT SPD +10 and reverting to LVL CHG near Mmo/Vmo if above airport restriction altitude.3) If you want some in-depth knowledge about the various systems and the FMC I can really recommend you buying the 737 NG Cockpit Companion, and the 737NG FMC Guide written by cpt. Bill Bulfer. They can be ordered here: www.fmcguide.com. Other free Internet sources of interest are:www.smartcockpit.comwww.b737.org.uk4) Depends on what mode you where in. Sounds like you had MCP SPD mode engaged on the FMA (Flight Mode Announciator, top of the PFD)5) This matter has been widely discussed here and elsewhere. DO a search for these issues. Depending on your CPU and amount of RAM you should get decent framerates with the PMDG NG. Beware this panel is complex so it will impact on your fps. Consider pushing some FS sliders to the left to compensate.Hope that helps you along the way...

Thank you very much. You answered my questions. I will post some more after I finish reading the manuals. Capherc
