December 4, 200322 yr I don't know if you have been following the discussion at the main forum, but it's about repaints have jagged edges when viewed from outside. Someone ugessted to look at a link where they said the solution might be to increase the mip level. I did this on the AA astrojet livery, where I increased it from mip level 1 to 11, and it worked beautifully. Now my question is, what texture names are used on the external model so I can change them. I did the fuselage as that is pretty obvious.ThanksMikkel
December 4, 200322 yr Mikkel,if I read your message correctly, you made changes to the actual AA fuse texture file? If you did, you are creating more work for yourself. The mip level change can be made from within FS Aircraft Settings panel where any change you make would be applied globally to all of your aircraft. http://www.precision...GX_Dev_Team.jpg PMDG Graphic Designer
December 4, 200322 yr Yea you would think so, but I made some tests after I became aware of this problem, and all I can say is that, with a 9700Pro increasing the mip level within fs9 over level 4 does absolutely nothing with regards to minimizing the jagged edges on the liveries. Below level 4 the picture deterioates noticeably. I found that fixing the actual file, increasing the mip level from 1 to 11 does absolutely wonders with the liveries...now I don't have the jaggies at all, very little anyway. So I would still be interested in knowing all the files the apply to the external side of the model.Mikkel
December 4, 200322 yr Mikkel,I have the same vid card as you do and my mip level within FS is at 4. There are other settings that will help jaggies. These are settings that are made at the driver level using the ATI Catalyst control panel. I can give you a hand but you really don't need to change any of the textures by adding mip levels. All of the screen shots by me were made using mip level 4 and you cannot see jaggies. http://www.precision...GX_Dev_Team.jpg PMDG Graphic Designer
December 4, 200322 yr Sure I would like that. Perhaps you could tell me the settings you have in your control panel. I'm using the Omega drivers 3.9. Maybe you could show me a picture of one of your planes and I could compare the two.Mikkel

December 5, 200322 yr Okay I have the same setup as you. The thing is, with this repaint there actually is 8 mip levels which makes a huge difference. You can verify this with either DXTbmp or imagetool.I attached an image of the American Airlines Astrojet livery showing what I mean. The jagged lines does not show up when zoomed all the way in, so I have to take a screenshot from some distance away from the plane which is also the usual way I would look at my plane from outside. If you open up the AAJ livery you will notice that it only contains 1 mip level, and that makes allthe difference in these two pictures, plus one very important factor too...if looked at from exactly sideways or at ground level it will not show. As you can see from my picture you have to look at it from an agle and elevated. It is kind of hard to see when I have to resize the imag, if you want a bigger picture to see what I mean let me know.Mikkelhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/51426.jpg
December 5, 200322 yr I've editted the original to let you see more clearly what I mean. You have to look at the orange "lightning" and see how the lines have "steps".Mikkelhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/51427.jpg
December 5, 200322 yr Mikkel, I now see what you're refering to. I have a feeling it's a driver issue but not 100% sure. I'll talk with our graphic guru and see what he thinks. I'll get back to you. http://www.precision...GX_Dev_Team.jpg PMDG Graphic Designer
December 5, 200322 yr Hi Pete- Just a question..Is this Amircan Airlines available now or is this for SU2 only?Troy
December 5, 200322 yr Troy, there is a fantasy 700 series based AA available now. Since AA only use the 800 series of the 737, I did the AA both as a temp measure until our 800 is ready and to do a little practice on the livery for the next phase of development. It should be available on our download page. It will probably be withdrawn once the 800 version is ready for release. http://www.precision...GX_Dev_Team.jpg PMDG Graphic Designer
December 5, 200322 yr Mikkel,Our graphic's expert has researched this issue and we are of the opinion that this is either an ATI card issue or a driver issue. He uses a GeForce card and does not have the alaising problem and as I recall, neither did I when I used a GeForce Ti4400 card I had during development of the AA Astrojet. This will hopefully be addressed on the next ATI driver update, which I gather will be released shorthly. http://www.precision...GX_Dev_Team.jpg PMDG Graphic Designer
December 5, 200322 yr There's no question it's a card issue. It's about the way the card handles the alpha channel in the paint. I have noticed it happens whenever there's a hard transition from where the paint has an alpha channel to where there is none. If you look at the AAJ paint and turn on the alpha channel you will notice that the orange lightning has no alpha channel added and the card has trouble with this. The temp fix with adding more mip levels solves this to some degree.Mikkel
December 5, 200322 yr Mikkel,I'll see if I can fix this for the 800 version of the Astrojet. http://www.precision...GX_Dev_Team.jpg PMDG Graphic Designer
