Autoland question

Featured Replies

Hi captains,I bought the PMDG 600/700/800/900 a couple of weeks ago, but i still cant't figure out how to use the autoland function properly. I am first flying on VNAV/LNAV as i enter the approach. When i start extending the flaps, the FMC lowers the speed limit to just under the max flaps speed limit. When i reach this speed, i want to extend more flaps. Now the max flaps speed is lower and i get an overspeed disconnect, so the problem is that VNAV keeps my speed to high. When i'm finally in the desired configuration, i press VOR/LOC to capture the localizer. I press APP when i have the runway right ahead of me, but it disconnects without warning. I've read a tutorial, but the flight was not based on LNAV/VNAV.Is there a procedure i can use for autoland the way i want it?Cheers,Ian Udinga

Hi Ian !First, have you selected your approach speed in the FMC?When starting your approach, you must take up FMC, selectthe init ref page and select which app-speed you like(depending on what flap settings you want).Second, have you tuned your Nav1 radio to the appropriatefrequency? It will not auto-tune, like in Airbus. If you want to use the full autoland feature, you must tuneboth Nav1 and Nav2 to the ILS-frequency.When you are close to the ILS-lobe you should change yourview on the Nav Display to show you the ILS-view, then youcan see when the ILS lobe comes alive. You can not selectAppr. on the MCP before that.Best regards Bj

Hi Bjorn, thanks for your quick reply!Yes, ref speed is selected, both nav radio's tuned, ILS glideslope indicators alive!Cheers,Ian Udinga

What do you mean by **DISCONNECT**? In other words what are you looking at that tells you this?[h4]Best Wishes,Randy J. Smithhttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/betaimg.jpgAMD 64 3200+ | ASUS KV8 DELUXE | GFORCE 5700 ULTRA @535/1000 | WD SATA 80 GIG | 512 DDR 400 |

Well, i press the APP switch, light goes on and off again.Cheers,Ian Udinga

Humm just as I thought ;-) Ok, this is what it really does. The real aircraft's APP light goes out when it captures G/S, please reference your FMA at this point which will have a GREEN G/S on the FMA. If you want a dual APP autoland make sure to ARM the second A/P (:( before 800 RA or it will be locked out..[h4]Best Wishes,Randy J.
