Landing: Engine Failure

Featured Replies

On last weekend I was flying to Frankurt/Main over VATSIM. On final, approaching 50 feet I idle the throttle, disconnect the autopilot and autothrottle and upon touchdown I hear "ENGINE FAILURE" and the two engines began to shutdown.Same thing happened on a similar flight.Aircraft was 737-800, no spoilers armed, flaps 40, speed about 150 knots, FS2004 just in case, the only unusual thing I see beginning descent was "AIR COND" on the warning annunciator lights. However on a third flight on same landing configuration, instead of idle the throttle, I have landed with 10% thrust and no engine failures were detected. It's weird...Last night using the same aircraft and same configuration, but different airport (Aeroparque Jorge Newbery) I have landed with idle throttle and also no engine failures detected.I don't remember to have striked the engine or the tail.If you happened to see a solution or perhaps I'm doing something wrong, please let me know it.Thanks in advance.Hernan.

Sounds like you may be having a tail strike when landing. What speed are you coming in at during the last 200ft? Remember you have a lot more fuselage hanging back there. :-)I mention this because you said that landing with power helped. Let me explain my thoughts. Adding power in the flare should allow you to "Float" in ground effect a little longer and should influence your pitch input to lower your angle of attack during flare. You will use more runway using this method, but may have a softer landing. :-)If adding power is helping, this could also mean you may be coming in a little slow during final approach. Again this would cause you to have to pitch to a higher angle of attack to compensate for the slow airspeed during flare. Adding power would solve this issue by increasing your approach speed and diminishing your pitch angle during flare.A flight instructor gave me an excellent tip. He taught that the key to a good landing is ensuring that you have a good solid, stable and "On the Numbers" approach. If something gets away from you or is a little off during the approach, chances are the landing is going to be a bit rough.A way to check this is to turn off all crash detection in FS as well as ensuring all of the PMDG failures are off. Try landing again with your no power scenario and see what happens. If no engine failure then I would say something is up with your landing technique on the bigger NG's.Hope this helps,

George Morris

I also had an engine failure after landing. It was during the deceleration on the landing roll, not on touch down. I reported the fact to PMDG support, who suggested it could be a tail strike.I tried that scenario a number of times (without A/P nor A/T) but did not manage to strike the tail. My technique was to hold the plane a couple of feet off the runway and fly level, raising the nose as the speed dropped until she finally sinks and lands. That resulted in a high nose attitute but the tail never touched the runway (it almost did though in the worse case).I believe it is very unlikely to have a tail strike at landing, at least with a normal approach (flaps 30/40 and Vref as per FMC). So it is quite possible that there is an issue with the engines on the -8/900, perhaps related to the engine failure at V1 issue...Christophe.

I had an engine failure once on touchdown. I even posted a screenshot of it here on the forums to prove that my tail didn't even come close to striking. I've only had three engine failures so far and none since that one on touchdown. Now, when I takeoff or land, I always make sure that my Engine Start switches are on "CONT".

Thanks George for your advice, but perhaps is a naive question, but if I got a tail strike on real life, engines no longer works? It quite difficult to understand for me.However I keep in mind your good practice about landing with a little power.Looking at other posts, I'm not the only one with the same problem.Once again, thank you very much for your fast response.Regards,Hernan
