In the Tutorial for the NG, this is how they say to do it-when on course to intercept the localizer-1) When the needle starts moving, press LOC2) Press ALT HOLD, THEN press APP3) Press CMD 2In the CBT courseware they say simply-when on course to intercept-1) Press APP, then CMD 2I found things got screwy when I tried the first way. When I simply pressed APP, it worked fine. Which way is actually how it should be done?

Christian, actually it doesn't really matter. Normally you'd be on an intercept heading for the localiser and as soon as you have intercepted the LOC you'd start descending on the glide path. At least that is the normal way ATC vectors the airplanes to the ILS. There are, however, exceptions and sometimes you'll find yourself on the LOC a long time before catching the glideslope. And if that happens you could go for the LOC mode on the MCP. But if you'd hit the APP button in such a situation the AP would catch the LOC as well and would just arm the G/S mode.So you see the LOC gets captured anyway, so it really doesn't matter which button you press (for an ILS approach, that is),As you maybe know there are also Localiser Approaches out there as well as Non-Precision Approaches using VOR radials. On these approaches the LOC button can be very useful!Hope this helps?Best regards,Markus

"2) Press ALT HOLD, THEN press APP"I'm also confused. It sounds like overkill pressing ALT HOLD. What purpose does it serve? Is this unique to the NG? Shouldn't your MCP altitude stop you from descending (assuming you haven't already armed APP).I also don't see the point of waiting to press VOR/LOC (i.e. until you had seen the pointer move). You would not press APP until you had had clearance to descend.Cheers.Ian.
