OK, it's not rocket science, but it's been bugging me and I've heard / read conflicting views, so here goes. You're at 10000, clearance given to 17000.Select 17000 in the MCP, and do you:1/ Click FLTCHG2/ Click VNAV3/ Click ALT HOLD and manually adjust the VS?Thoughts on what is correct (and why!) would be appreciated.ThanksTim

Yes there is no FLCH, it's called LVL CH on the 737. If you are at 10'000 and selected 17'000 and wanted to climb to the new altitude you could -1] Use LVL CH by always setting the new altitude into the MCP spd window then pushing LVL CH.2] To use VNAV you must be temporary leveled off and depending on your NG settings (If you enabled VNAV ALT) you would have a couple of ways to do this -a: In a CLIMB, after leveling off at an intermediate altitude, reset the MCP to either the original CRZ ALT or intermediate another and push VNAV.b: In a CLIMB, reset the MCP and push the ALT INTERVENTION button. If you have any restrictions between your current ALT and the MCP altitude, "each push" on the ALT INTERVENTION button will delete the restrictions from the FMC. So if you have two restrictions above 10,000, lets say 12000 and 13000, you are at 10000 and reset the MCP to 15000 and push the alt intervention ONCE, you will remove the 12000 restriction but push it TWICE and both restrictions are removed and you will climb direct to 15000.3] In CRUISE but wish to cruise higher, if you have the FMC displaying the CRZ PAGE and reset the MCP altitude this will place the NEW ALTITUDE into the CDU's scratchpad, you then select the new altitude into LSK 1L (Line select key 1 left) and this will RAISE your currect CRZ ALT and also perform a CRUISE CLIMB to the newer altitude! Try that with ANOTHER SIM ;-)4] Do not try to LOWER your cruise altitude with ALT INTV, if you make this mistake you will find yourself in an early DEScent and will need to leave the VNAV mode for LVL CH or V/S.."3/ Click ALT HOLD and manually adjust the VS?" Not on this type of bird, if ALT HOLD is the pitch mode then selection of V/S means pushing the button to UNBLANK the window that will display 0000 which then be changed dynamically.Best Wishes,[h4]Randy J.
