Was messing with an A300 the other day. Like most modern airplanes, the primary flight controls are powered by 3 separate hydraulic actuators. Like these modern airplanes tend to have, there is a monitoring system that makes sure that all 3 are working. We were checking that this monitoring system was operational. On the Boeings if one of these actuators fail, there will be an EICAS message stating the nature of the problem. For this type of problem, the Boeing EICAS presents a clearly discernable idea of what the problem is and then leaves it to the flight crew to determine a rational course of action. We found that Airbus had adopted a slightly different philosophical approach to its method of providing systems failure information to a flight crew. The Airbus MM took us through the steps toward generating the EICAS annunciation that we need to see if one of these actuators failed. Maybe we're just a bit too used to dealing with Boeings, but it totally cracked us up when we got to that last step. As we pressed that last button to generate the failure, the A300's EICAS flashed into view only an unembellished, non-elaborated annunciation in a single, succinct one liner . . ."LAND NOW"(And of course the
