The reports of my death...

Recommended Posts

Are, as Mark Twain said, exaggerated.I'm posting first (so it will get buried, unlike me :>) but for those of you who saw me land last in the F16 and then crash, I bailed out before I hit those buildings. It was only the second time I've ever landed a jet, and the first time it took me several miles to roll to a stop -- apparently there aren't several miles of grazing land around Heathrow airport for some odd reason (I didn't know about reverse thrusters -- I've been told it's F2 but I'll never find out, since that was my last jet ride. The FAA English equivilent pulled my ticket as soon as I came to a stop and I need to take a boat back to the states).BTW, I helped escort the flight despite having only been in the F16 once before, for a few minutes, and I did the whole 1 1/2 hours without AP (because, of course, I had no idea where the AP was). I'm exhausted. Thanks to all who helped me out -- particularly the host (and baton carrier) who I'll always think of as "N96" And London is *beautiful* -- I will have to fly there more often, I couldn't believe how detailed and wonderful the Thames looks at sunset.

You know, that F16 has a problem. Ive never been able to find reverse thrusters on it no matter how hard I hit the F2 button. Yesterday I hit CTRL F1 (Fuel cutoff) whilst flaring and still overran Heathrow.Worse still everytime Ive landed that plane it rolls over onto its side during straight braking and puts a wing through the turf, yesterday only being caught by a decisive use of the Y key. Don't let this put you off flying jets, just remember not to try and land that F16 and you'll be ok ;-)

I was flying the F16 that is called "Boys from Syracuse" I believe on Hawkeyez recommendation (while "Boys" relates to any F16s stationed in NY, AFAIK, this particular sim plane goes by that nomiker). In any case, it was also a stealth fighter, since only the baton holder could see me. LOL. Probably just as well, since that meant none of you could see my crash (although it *was* a perfect landing -- truly, even better than I touch down in the Baron).Toranado -- landing in FS to me is where 50% of the fun is (the other part is just flying around and watching scenery. I'm a lookie Lou at heart). I can't see just bailing out every time I want to end a session. Now, if it's just a question of there being something wrong with the air file, or something editable in the aircraft.cfg, perhaps I'll try fighter jets again, assuming I can get it corrected.

I didn't think F-16s were equipped with thrust reversers... I thought you had to use a combination of flare, brakes, spoilers, and prayer to keep those bad boys from running out of runway when you came down.

Yep, that last F16 is what I was flying, by Giuseppe.I might try the other air files from your F16 with the one I was using. Or not, as the case may be. While it was fun to fly ONCE (well, actually twice if you count my practice flight) I'm just an old prop man at heart. I only flew because at the time we didn't have another fighter pilot (if I had known Torenado was going to show up I have just gone in my trusty old Baron and taken it easy).Although I have to admit there's something kind of satisfying about stepping on the gas and *zooming* past everyone...
