Interfacing PDA to msfs?

Featured Replies

Having returned from Oshkosh with a new "anywhere map"-a gps system that works on a pda (which is just about the most amazing thing I have ever seen) I was wondering if there is a way to use it with msfs? It syncs with the computer through a usb port. Thanks for any help.http://members.telocity.com/~geof43/Geofdog2.gif

That is what I used to practice with my anywhere map software. You just need a null modem cable from the PC to the PDA, and Peter Dowson's GPSout module.

AnywhereMap is amazing as an SA tool :) it is amazingly accurate with the ANywhere GPS that I use with it and I'm very impressed witht he fetures.GPSOUT only works with the serial cable- USB is NFG.Tim

Hey Geof-On another couple notes, did you get a chance to see the new Garmin 196. That thing is incredible--HSI, etc. Also has aviation, road (driving), and water (boating) modes. It just came out a few weeks ago.On another topic, I thought I'd let you know that I uploaded a few pics of our flight last fall to airliners.net (specifically, an exterior shot of the Deb and a few overhead shots of KFNT). You can see them by simply clicking on the link in my signature. This past weekend, I caught some neat pics of a P-3 Orion at KPTK. Pretty neat. :-) edit - you can see some of them here: http://www.flightsimnetwork.com/dcforum/DC...mID8/11501.htmlhttp://www.flightsimnetwork.com/dcforum/DC...mID8/11582.htmlRegards,http://home.earthlink.net/~snyders2000/name.jpg | [LINK:www.airliners.net/search/[email protected]|AIRLINERS.NET PHOTOS] [link:www.flightsimnetwork.com/dcforum/DCForumID8/posting101.html|SCREENSHOT TUTORIAL] | [link:www.biblegateway.com/bgaudio/english/NIV/Max%20McLean/RM/bgaudio.pl?selection=1]AUDIO BIBLE][/b

Yeah -I saw the 196 but didn't feel it was that much of an improvement over the 195 to warrent getting it. The anywhere map gives much more, and has many more features not to mention the ugrade/expandability. They also have a standby artificial horizon now available for it which is really the cat's meow-may get that eventually also.Garmin seems to be trying to corner the gps market by being everything to everyone-aircraft, boaters, and hikers. For me, it misses some valuable things that are available in competing products for pilots. The anywhere map was obviously designed by pilots for pilot's alone and it shows-let alone having color, real terrain, obstacle warnings, and airports within gliding distance-let alone 100's of other features. You can check it out here:http://www.controlvision.com/Click "tour".Nice shots as always!http://members.telocity.com/~geof43/Geofdog2.gif

"I assume I am therefore out of luck-having only a usb cable?"You might be, but I have a thought. I had a Garmin 135 GPS (just a reciever) plugged into my computer. To get the programs to see it, I found a USB to serial driver on the net even though it was USB. My computer saw it as a serial device even though it was connected to the USB port. It might work, it might not and more than likely, it will take a little bit of trickery and probably some luck. I will dig through my downloads and email the driver to you if you wanna give it a shot. I would be interested to know myself, I plan on getting the AnywhereMap after I pass my ppl checkride.-------------Michael

Its sent! Let me know if it works out. Good Luck!-------------Michael

I got it to work!!The trick was not the driver you sent-but to plug the serial connector (I didn't even realize I had one in addition to the usb) into the com 1 port-then disable activesync from using the com port.In any case it works-it is Truly Amazing!!!!http://members.telocity.com/~geof43/Geofdog2.gif
