October 31, 200223 yr What is determined in determining which settings of flaps to use?http://events8.tripod.com/pilot_tag.JPG
October 31, 200223 yr Hum Good question. I think first of all the WEIGHT on takeoff and the LENGTH of the runway are what come to mind?? @ flaps 5 it would be easy to produce enough lift for a lite loaded bird. Altitude should also play some part in all this. But hey i'm just guessing! Randy J Smith
October 31, 200223 yr The airlines standard procedure will determine it!!Where I fly its flaps 5 everywhere unless flaps 15 would give you a higher limit weight (which may occur on short strips, never happens in our route structure).Or in reported windshear conditions where the second segment is not obstacle limited (which again rarely happens). In 3 years of 767 flying I've seen one flaps 15 takeoff.

Correct... its SOP dependent. I
November 1, 200223 yr This is interesteing. Still, can anyone come up with a really good argument why flaps 5 should be superior than flaps 15? Flaps 15 allows for less wear and tear, less time on runway (remember, runway behind You is runway lost) lower speed and more lift. I can not think of one reason where flaps 5 should have an advantage to 15 (unless You are really, really light).../Patric
November 1, 200223 yr Patric,Sure. 2nd segment or 3rd segment climb requirements. A Flap 5 jet will have better climb performance than a flap 15 jet.Besides, its 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. Less tire wear, more flap mechanism wear. Take your (Airline) choice.Kevin in CYOW
November 1, 200223 yr From what I have seen first hand, it would appear Flap 5 is common for Air Canada unless the SOP's have changed of late. I see this on the CYOW-CYYZ and the CYYZ-EGLL hops I have done. For the virtual world, I look at runway length, weather, obstructions post the runway...then balance that with weight - above TOW of 300,000lbs I generally choose flap 15, below that weight, flap 5....just seems to be a happy zone for the PIC767.Rob.
