Proper trim setting for takeoff

Featured Replies

Hi folksIm new here, this is my first post.. I'm flying PIC for quite some time now and do it quite serious. Although I still have 3 questions which I hope some of you can answer:- How can I 'calculate' the proper trim setting for takeoff ? I usually trim to about 1.8/2.2 but the plane handles different according to the fuel onboard.- Can someone shortly explain the use of ADF ? I still don't know what it actually do or when I need it.- I'm interested in buying the CH products yoke. Is it worth the buy ? I currently have the MS sidewinder 2.Thanks for an answer,Timon.

For ADF info you can go here: http://www.auf.asn.au/navigation/other.html#adf http://www.dc3airways.com/TechEd/te_nav_adf.html http://www.geocities.com/joedoggyuk/Using_NBDs.htm2] I have heard nothing but praise for CH products and when I can afford it I will buy a yoke peddle combo!3] TRIM. This was one of the questions I had early on because the aircraft kept yelling at me on take off..........Lol. Here you go:"The Zero Fuel Weight has been worked out drawn at a point = to the default PIC ZFW. It is in an INDEX position that I have worked out as PIC does not model how the aircraft is loaded.Add the fuel weight to the ZFW.From this find the Fuel Index. Round the Fuel Weight up to the next 1000 KGS. Note down the Index effect in the box below the ZFMI.Add the ZFMI and FI to get the TOW IndexLook at the graph. From the ZFW Line count the number of Index Units that The Fuel Differs by.Draw a vertical line at this new point. On this line mark a small horizontal line where the TOW intersects it.Notice the diagonal lines on the graph.Draw a line parralel to the diagonals at the horizontal line you just drew. Now you can see how many units of trim you need to add.Hope this helps.Mark McGrath"Hope this helps,Best Wishes, crvm

Thanks for the info ! Although I need to learn alot about VOR navigation

>Hi folks Hi TIMON!>- How can I 'calculate' the proper trim setting for takeoff >? I usually trim to about 1.8/2.2 but the plane handles >different according to the fuel onboard. This was already answered for you (and answered well).>>- Can someone shortly explain the use of ADF ? I still don't >know what it actually do or when I need it. If you are not 100% familiar with IFR procedures I would have to say that it is well worth your time learning how to fly all of the different IFR procedures out there such as: NDB, VOR, LOC, LDA, ILS, Procedure Turns, Holds, and DME Arcs using all of the different modes available on the panel (MAP, ROSE, ARC, and finally using your RMI only). It takes some time but will make flying the aircraft a lot of fun.>- I'm interested in buying the CH products yoke. Is it worth >the buy ? I currently have the MS sidewinder 2. I went from the MS FF2 which is an excellent joystick to the CH Yoke and Pedals. It is one of the best investments I have ever made for my flight simming hobby. The Yoke adds a completely new dimension to flying - I can not even explain. Now with my left hand I can fly the aircraft and key my microphone, with my right hand free to click other switches (either on the panel with the mouse or on the yoke itself), and finally the feet are still there to provide rudder steering and breaking action.I also found that the precision of the Yoke blows away that of the joystick. My landings and overall control of the PIC have improved 5 fold since I adapted to the yoke. There were some initial setup and configuration problems that I had - which were quickly overcome by some help on the hardware forum. From time to time a problem comes up with the configuration - though that does appear to be a MSFS2K issue and not CH.The yoke has a screw/clamp that allows me to easily attach and detach it from my desk - when not flying I stow the yoke on top of my monitor - it takes me about 20 seconds to have it secured and ready to fly. Now I do have a pretty fancy shmancy keyboard tray/drawer/crane - so I am able to connect the yoke and still use my keyboard underneath is - If you are one of those who uses a corner of a desk for your flight simulator - you may want to look into how this will affect the securing of the yoke (and you also might want to look into ergonomics while you are at it ).The Yoke and Pedals are not cheap - that's for sure. If you can afford it (or justify it) and convince your wife you need it - I would highly recommend you purchase a yoke.>>Thanks for an answer, >>Timon. Hope that helps,Ian Elchitz CYWG

Hi,:-) correct me if I am wrong but I just calculated the trim with the chart, full wing tanks (36500 KGS), none in the center tank. My trim turned out to be 1 unit. The plane did not stay at the 15-degree take-off pitch I comanded, it wanted to pitch down I had to hold the stick back. Even with the trim at 3 I had to hold the stick back to maintain pitch until 1000 ft. I used 4 units to maintain the plane at the pitch I want after take-off. Is this normal or is the chart not accurate with PIC? Or did I calculate the trim wrong?
