some bad news from Boeing

Featured Replies

Just to correct that, this accident did not happen in the Paris Air Show, but in a small Airport named Habsheim, which is also in France (near Colmar I think!!).Since there is no official report (at least one that the public has access to), we can only speculate as to what actually happened then, ,so in absence of facts, so there is no need to put the blame on anyone or anything. I won't be dragged into this neverending Boeing vs Airbus, to me it's more a question of taste than anything else (why a Ford more than a Buic, a Renault, more than a Peugeot, a BMW more than a Mercedes??)Regards,Francois

I would also like to see the report of that A320 landing. It seems that the air/ground logic was very flawed? WOW or wheel spin-up didn't switch the aircraft into ground mode? And mustn't it have been a very short runway since wheel braking alone didn't stop the aircraft? Also TWA800 is probably not the best example, since there is a wealth of conspiracy theories regarding that crash (stray SAM missiles and so on...).Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing

I read an excellent report on the Airbus crash in Mulhouse's Habsheim airfield. The plane was a recently delivered A320-111 F-GFKC "Ville d'Amsterdam" that crashed on June 26, 1988. The report asserts that it was pilot error when the captain informed the passengers that "We will do to fly over to demonstrate the continuity of French aviation", before he did the flyover the airfield. The problem was that Captain Asseline expected to do the fly over the runway 02 but when he approached the airfield he realized that the spectators were along a grass airstrip aligned northwest. With little time to react, he descended below 100 ft and stabilized at 30 ft AGL. However, because of optical illusion due to the high angle of attack, they did not realize the trees at the end of the runway were closer than expected and by the time they realized it and applied full power, it was to late. They had even decativated the alpha floor function during the flyover, thus they were flying totally under pilot control. The reference is:AIR DISASTER Volume 3by Macarthur JobPublished by Aerospace Publications Pty LtdP.O. Unfortunately, the Airbus/Boeing thing has become a personal issue along nationality lines it would almost seem. We used to just joke around with it in a light hearted way, all in fun. It is a sad commentary on our interrelationships to see it come down to something so serious and sad that real world crashes of the Airbus and Boeing families have to be sited in order to make a point, with little real information I might add. I live near St. Louis, Missouri which was the TWA World Headquarters before the buyout by American and I have 3 family members who work for Macdonald Douglas, now Boeing. TWA Flight 800 was and is a sad thing around these parts, very sad.Too bad for all of us that we just can

Oh dear, not the airbus urban legend nonsense again. Its funny how people like to comment and speculate on things which they have very limited knowledge on. I guess only time will tell if these folks will be able to clear up their misconceptions. I personally believe that Airbuses are a great choice for Air Canada and I'm glad they're standardizing their fleet like they are doing today. Ask any Airbus pilot today, the vast majority will tell you that they enjoy flying the 'bus.

Hey Mike,I also appreciate all possible flying machines. But the only thing I did was set things straight. There were things said about airbus(and boeing) that are not right, so i corrected them. For me this is not at all a nationality thing, it may be for some others but for me... no.If you ask me, pilots(ALL of them) should be very glad they're flying the bird they're flying, airbus, boeing, Gulfstream, LEarjet.... whatever. And for me it'll be nothing else. These days no-one can afford to say: i don't like that plane so i'm not flying it. As future pilot(hopefully) i've noticed that we don't have the option to choose where or with what we fly. If we get a job, these days, we can be VERY happy with it because at this time that's really NOT evident...So all of the Boeing/Airbus thingies are, imho, ridiculous. Of course sometimes people get emotionally 'imbalanced' and react on a more improper manner(done it myself so i'm not blaming anyone here).Just can't stand lies being published...Cheers

it is a known fact that an A340(old series) is in fact severely underpowered. the A330 doesn't have this problem, but i think not even the A320(small series) has that problem. And normally, when TOGA mode is initiated, the airbus logic advances thrust to TOGA and turns on the SRS/RWY modes so a pitch up to 33

ALL Airbus planes with perhaps the exception of the new A340 -500/600 are underpowered when compared to comparable airplanes. This underpoweredness gives them better fuel efficiency though than any other comparable airplane that's out there now. The A319 might be exception though, it's a very well performing aircraft.

LMAO....SAM missle theoryies for TWA 800???? Oh brother. Well, some people believe space aliens brought it down. Gosh, I guess we'll never know.I prefer to believe what the NTSB & FAA concluded, but, .....who knows...(insert sarcasim and dramatic music)...maybe it was a missle from a spaceship.....LOL.

>LMAO....SAM missle theoryies for TWA 800???? Oh brother. What rock have you been living under? ;-) The conspiracy theories regarding TWA800 are quite widespread, and I've seen people in various FS forums writing about it. I was merely saying that one of these people might have jumped upon you for using that example.Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing

I am quite aware of the various theories. I was only commenting on thier sillyness. It seems that all it takes is a simple suggestion to create knee-jerk reactions out of people, such as the missile theory. Looking over the various FACTS & reports it is quite clear as to what caused the tragedy. Is it 100% certain, no, but 99% will do. :)

Read up on the A330/A340 cruise altitude incident again. No, the autothrust didn't go "crazy." What happened was one of the planes hit air turbulance, went overspeed and the aircraft's overspeed protection system kicked in and started to put the aircraft into a climb in an attempt to correct the overspeed condition. At no time did the plane nearly stall or have its systems go crazy.
