PFC Console/Throttles ..PIC 767 A/T

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone,I am a very very fortunate (I think) new owner of a PFC Yoke and Throttle console. After years of drooling, I saved my pennies, and since my kids have finished college (yahooooo) ... I bought!!!!All works very well on GA aircraft, the Meridian, Cardinal, Eagle, etc., works on regionals .. ATR, Fokker. Autothrottle on the DF 737 works well without difficulty. Having a really good throttle really make a huge difference flying. But ... when I come to PIC 767 ... HMMMM .. things do not work too well. I have read Pete Dowson's doc over and over. I have searched this forum and found one hit which helped a bit.Flying with PIC, I disconnect my joystick, switch fs.configs to one with NO Joystick entries, and make sure the PFC has the throttle suppression deal UNCHECKED.With the joystick .. I could simply F3 to 50% N1 then press N1/EPR and off I would go leaving the joystick throttle in idle. The 767 A/T always worked very well through the whole flight regime until I disconnected on final approach. With the PFC throttle, I have tried many combinations, throttle at idle, at the wall, no matter what I do, the A/T will not hold speed unless I move the throttle to the approximate TMS N1 setting .. I don't think this is how it's supposed to work. Certainly flyable but not right. So I would like to ask any of you PIC guys who might be luckly like me and have a PFC throttle, how you use the throttle with the 767 in the various flight regines? How are you set up? Do you have to move the throttle to the wall or leave at idle, or like me do you have to adjust all the time? I have the latest FSUIPC and PFC DLLs ... the throttle is calibrated, speed brakes and reversers work very well ... just the A/T is strange.Any help, pointers, whatever would be much appreciated ... Thanks and (hooray tomorrow is FRIDAY!!!!!!)

Paul,It is odd to see this post this evening after spending nearly an hour getting my throttle to work correctly with PIC. Since getting my new computer, I had to wait a few weeks to get a second sound card with a game port to plug in my old but very functional Suncom SFS Throttle Assembly. During the time without it, I was using the throttle on the CH Yoke but really missed the way the duel control handled the PIC. With the detents on both ends, it allowed a clean idle setting and a very null area below it. I use a two way thumb switch on the left side on the handles to kick in the reverse thrust (mapped to F2) and it worked perfectly. The problem is in the initial calibration of the throttle. If it is not set up correctly, and mine wasn't, I have exactly the same problem you describe Paul. The setting in the PIC menu to override manual throttles, when A/T is engaged, works fine on the CH Yoke and many other devices, but it does not do squat on the analog game port connected Suncom Throttle, NOTHING, NADA, Zilch. I leave it turned on for good measure but the real trick for me is in the calibration. Here is how I handle the problem:Enter the calibration wizard in XP, or whatever operating system.Set the throttle about 10% above the idle position. (for me, that is 10% above the idle detent)Now start the calibration process by getting to the screen that asks you to move the throttle all the way up and back. Here is where it gets a bit more artsy than scientific, start the movement up from the previously set position of about 10% above idle and STOP about 5% before you get to the firewall detent. Then pull the throttle back down, STOPPING at the place you started from. After that, if you have a duel throttle, repeat the same process for it.Before doing this, it is best to play around with the throttle, figuring out where those approximate 10% (above idle) and 5% (below full) positions are. Use a piece of paper tape or something to mark those positions before going through the calibration. Another trick with duel throttle handles is to start with both at that 10% position. When you bring the throttle back down, stop exactly beside the opposite handle. That assures you get them in sync. Start up FS and go through the assignments section making sure you do not have throttles, or anything else, mapped to multiple devices. Page through all of the settings watching closely at the joystick assignments column. Repeat for each device. As to the FS sensitivity settings, I have the throttles set to full sensitivity and no null zone. The calibration process I follow takes care of that.FSUIPC is used by many to set up throttles. I have NEVER had any luck with it and PIC. It is a bad marriage as far as my equipment is concerned. Go ahead and try it. It may work well in your situation. If not, just select it back off as I have done so many times.EDIITED TO ADD THIS PARAGRAPH:The trade off (or downside) for using my throttle assembly with PIC is the loss of the ability to run up to 70% N1 on the takeoff. After lining up on the center line, I have to pull the throttle back fully to the lowest position, then hit the N1 switch (which is mapped on my throttle). Otherwise, the autothrottle keeps trying to reseek the idle position and my flight is in trouble before I even get off the ground. I leave the throttles at the idle position until I am ready to flip off the A/T on arrival.I hope some of this helps you or others. I have spent many an hour dealing with the situation Paul describes. This is the only solution that works for me, and I have used it on more PIC flights than I can count. If Wade is catching this post, please consider a more forceful A/T override switch in the next project. It would be most appreciated.

Mike,Thanks so much for the reply. Recalibrating the throttle for a good sized null zone below idle did the trick. I wish I had thought of that.I did a circuit around lax, 25R to 25R up to fl250 ... up, down, fast slow, accelerating, slowing ... works really well did a hands off autoland (did not have time to set up yoke) ... really looked great in spot view.THANKS AGAIN for your HELP ... have a great Weekend!!!!!!!

Glad it worked for you Paul. Now enjoy the new throttle.MikeB
