Modifying Route Page

Featured Replies

I have not been able to figure out how to modify a route on the route page so as to insert a different airway between two waypoints. Can anyone explain how to do this?As an example, suppose I am flying from TJSJ to KLAX and I have as part of my flightplan the route segment ELP J2 GBN. On the FMC Route Page it would look like this:wherever ELPJ2 GBNwhereverNow let's say I want to change that route segment to ELP J50 GBN instead. I cannot just type over J2 and replace it with J50, nor can I delete the entire line and replace it with J50 GBN. I know there must be a way to do this but I have not figured it out.Can anyone help? Assistance would be appreciated.Damon

"I have not been able to figure out how to modify a route on the route page so as to insert a different airway between two waypoints."According to the FMC User's Guide:Airways may be deleted only when the route is not active or when the active waypoint does not lie on the airway. An Airway may also be deleted by entering "DIRECT" over the airway identifier. I haven't tried this in PIC though.Generally, build and modify on the Route page, but delete on the Legs page.Hope this helps.Cheers.Ian.

This works:"Albuquerque Center, any chance of direct Gila Bend after El Paso for American 666?""American Triple 6, departing El Paso cleared direct Gila Bend""Ok, after El Paso direct Gila Bend for American 666. Thanks Albuquerque!"What you really should do is try ELP J50 SSO J4 TNP.PDZ4

Damon, You don't *modify* the route with the RTE page but with the LEGS page. If you need to divert etc go DIR TO or ATC vectors. So get the plan correct before you depart. [h4]Best Wishes,Randy J. I suppose that one could just type in the new route in the RTE2 pages and then activate it?

If I remember correctly, RTE 2 is mostly used as a backup to the original route, if on a common multileg flight, they can just CO RTE at the end of the first leg.[h4]Best Wishes,Randy J. Is it never really the case that you get a new route with new airways while enroute? I'm thinking about some weather-related diversion to fly around a line of thunderstorms. It would be a pain to do it on the LEGS page given that you would have to expand airways manually.Lee Hetherington (KBED)767PICRealism already here

Exactly, that was sort of my point. It is not unheard of for ATC to change an airway route enroute, and I don't just mean DIRECT TO somewhere. Entire enroute portions may be changed, perhaps for other traffic, or as you say, enroute weather issues. So, it would certainly be a hassle to delete all the waypoints subsequent to the current one and then re-build the flightplan if, say, there are 30 waypoints in the current flightplan. What I have attempted with some success is changing the route on the RTE 2 page and then switching to that route. But again, if there are many route segments it can be a bit of a hassle to re-build it.Is this how it's really done?Damon

haha Ian I can always count on you to give me the correct routing :-) and if you were controlling Albequerque Center I'm sure that I wouldn't have a problem getting DIRECT! But then that wouldn't solve the dilemna of how to change to route :-)Damonp.s. I have tried the idea you posted in the later post re RTE2, but then you still have to re-build the remainder of the route on the RTE2 page and you cannot apparently **insert** a modified route segment in an otherwise valid flightplan.

Not saying this is the "right way" to do this but I simply do the following if I need/want do make a partial routing change involving airways while in flight.Select RTE 2Enter DESTination airportClick NEXT PAGEEnter the airway entry waypoint (or DIRECT TO waypoint) on scratchpadClick LSK R1Enter airway on scratchpadClick LSK L2Enter the airway exit waypoint on scratchpadClick LSK R2(repeat as needed to complete the route deviation)Click LSK R6 to ACTIVATEClick EXECAfter crossing the last waypoint before the airway exit waypoint (or last waypoint on the deviation), I go to RTE 1 LEGS page and move up the waypoint (up to LSK L1) that rejoins the original route. Then click LSK R6 to ACTIVATE and click EXEC.The example given in the question is not a situation I would normally do this with because there are really only a couple of additional entries on RTE 2 to finish up the route. But if this were a flight with several waypoints/airways that would need to be entered, the method I described works very well and saves a lot of re-entry of data.In some situations, copying RTE 1 to RTE 2 may allow you to make the airway changes on the RTE 2/3/4 pages. But this is inconsistent at best so I usually just opt for using RTE 2 for the deviation only.

"It is not unheard of for ATC to change an airway route enroute, and I don't just mean DIRECT TO somewhere."I'll try and explain this a little clearer, Damon, but I can't guarantee it will work..... I haven't tried this in PIC, only in PS1.Overwrite an existing unwanted Airway entry (on the left hand side of the Route page), using the word "DIRECT" (line-selected from the scratchpad).OLDAWY......ABCDE(old airway exit point)....becomes.....DIRECT..... ABCDE Enter the name of a waypoint where you wish to enter (i.e. join) a new Airway on top of ABCDE. Doing this opens up a Route Discontinuity, allowing the entry of new Airways and waypoints.DIRECT..... NWWPT (new waypoint).....then...EMPTY BOXES.....Discont...etcPlease let me know if this works in PIC.Thanks.Cheers.Ian.

Seems like a reasonable idea Mike, thanks, I'll try it.Damon
