touchdown rate

Featured Replies

hi!does anyone know which t/d rate is the maximum that still counts as normal? or what is usual under normal conditions (good visibility, no failures etc.)I can nearly always land this great plane under 100 ft/min, my average t/d rate (after about 10-12 flights) is 50 ft/min.regardsRob

A good landing is one you can walk away from. A really good landing is one where you get to use the airplane again!Tony Vallillo

Basically if you get below -100fpm that is good as long as you don't land too far down the runway. Average would be about 290ft/min on the flight simulator of all the users in the world. In reality probably less. You will damage the plane at any more than 450ft/min.

Not the most scientific assessment but hey you're the real captain here! Nice articles on flightsim by the way, you write very well.Is it true that a decisive touchdown is better flying technique than a long flare and gentle-as-a-feather touchdown? I've heard aircrew say that you're better off landing firmly but smoothly and getting on with the rollout rather than just mucking around 3 feet above the runway until much of it is behind you.

You are correct. In most cases, you don't want to float right out of the touchdown zone (first 3000') trying to grease it on. Among other perils, you could drag the tailskid! It is especially important to catch the 2 wire, so to speak, when landing on a wet or slippery runway. Tony Vallillo
