ZLA's Coastal Heatwave - Saturday 7/13

Recommended Posts

Just a reminder that this Saturday, July 13, from 19:00Z / 12L00 PDT, Los Angeles Center will be holding our Coastal Heatwave Event. This fly-in features the region of our Coast TRACON, in between Los Angeles and San Diego. The primary airport is Orange County / John Wayne KSNA. As a reliever, Long Beach KLGB is available. VFR and General Aviation are welcome there, as well as at Torrance KTOA.This event is designed to accommodate all types of pilots. There are several ways to enjoy this event. By using the event web site (www.laartcc.org)...1) Airline pilots can use the "Commercial" link to find flight plans into and out of the region. Try coming in from Las Vegas (KLAS), the Bay Area (KSFO, KOAK, KSJC) or Phoenix (KPHX).2) IFR short haul routes are available using the "Tower Enroute Control" or TEC system. Select the "IFR" link. Flights from Santa Barbara (KSBA), Burbank (KBUR), Ontario (KONT), and San Diego (KSAN) can be found.3) Leave the big birds in the hangar and take out your personal favorite light plane and try some VFR. Select the "VFR" link for flight ideas and procedures. Catalina Island's Avalon is an excellent light plane destination only about 20 minutes off shore with a tricky hilltop landing and beautiful scenery. 4) Helicopter and Military pilots are also welcome and we have dedicated operations for them. The Real World Catalina Island is serviced by a regular helicopter shuttle service. Long Beach has 3 helipads midfield in the default FS2002 scenery and on the airport chart. See the appropriate links.5) Finally - our special feature, try out a floatplane to/from L11 Pebbly Beach, on the shore of Catalina Island. This Seaplane base has a simple terminal in default FS2002, but we have available a fantastic scenery download with a seaplane dock and nearby heliport. See the picture on the web site. We believe this is the first VATUSA event to feature seaplane ops.Don't just do one operation - try several of these cool flight types. This fly-in will deliver a much more realistic feel as we should have a mix of 757s, Caravans, Jet Streams, and Bell Helos - VFR & IFR - all buzzing around the SoCal basin. A perfect time to break-in the new AIBridge TCAS program and Servinfo gauge.Be advised that the event has a timing overlap with the Toronto Convention Flyin. Our event kicks off 3 hours after the Toronto Event, so enjoy some flying around Toronto and head on over to the West Coast for a sunny afternoon off Catalina Island. We'll see ya at the ramp !Jim BartoshZLA ARTCC Assistant Chief
