VATSIM - Newbie Impressions

Featured Replies

Fellow Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers,A few years ago, I checked into VATSIM and considered becoming a member. One thing led to another and I never got around to it. I have FS2002 and FS2004, but always enjoyed them offline until this week. I have been on vacation with some free time available, so I joined VATSIM and set-up the software. The "Software Set-Up" Help files (pdf) that came with the "all in one" package were very helpful and soon I was up and running. My flight experience is mostly focused on online combat simulations. I have been a member of squadrons in Air Warrior and Aces High as well as Falcon 4.0. I still spend a lot of time with the IL-2 series at Hyperlobby. I use FS to relax. Make a flight plan, get airborne, and learn the systems and avionics. After reading the FAQ at VATSIM, I decided to fly to and from small airports to gain some experience and stay out of heavy traffic. My first flights were either late at night or early in the morning, so I broadcast my activities on the Unicom channel, since there were no ATC in my region. I enjoyed my first experience with ATC during a flight from Phoenix Sky Harbor to Salt Lake City on Thanksgiving day. Since then, I have been connected to VATSIM with the exclusion of a little sleep, planning my next flight, meals, and the call of nature.:-hah :-hah :-hahIn summary, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time while connected to VATSIM. The pilots and ATC have been both courteous and professional at all times. I appreciate that they are patient with new pilots and foster an atmosphere that makes me feel welcome in this community. I have a lot to learn, but I benefit from the challenges, take pleasure in the rewards, and gain knowledge from both mistakes and success. Personally, I cannot afford flying lessons or the cost of aquiring an aircraft in real life. For me, simulating it on the VATSIM network is the next best thing. To everyone involved, you have my sincere gratitude. From the folks that take care of administrative duties at VATSIM, to the developers that create the utilities that make it all happen, thanks! My only regret is that I did not become a member a long time ago! So if your on the fence and thinking about trying this, don't hesitate. Do it!:-newbieAWA861

That pretty much sums up my experience and opinion too. Apart from the combat sims..Never used them.Regards!Gavin
