7" TFT for GPS etc (VGA connector)

Featured Replies

>Hi Guys,>Take a look at this site.Has 7" tft with vga input says it is>1024x768>but think they are 800x600.Also have video input.>http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...&category=38650>>I thought of it for external GPS.I was thinking about this kind of approach once. But then I figured that since a real GPS would also be useful for me when flying out there in real life, and it would make sense to have the same unit "simulated" as well to become familiar with it, I might as well save a bit for a real Garmin GPS III Pilot or 196. (Garmin GPS III Pilot costs about 500 euros) Sure it costs more, but then again, all those screens, knobs, buttons and the amount of work needed for it - in my case I have started to realize it makes more sense to get a real one and hook it up with GPSOut.dll - it teaches me to use my own gps a lot better when I can use the same unit in the sim as well.Has anyone actually done this with a real GPS? From the docs it appears it is possible, but I need to find a real unit to first try it out of course :) My understanding is that these things can work in slave mode and display the FS200x coordinates from the NMEA output from the sim.Of course it wouldnt be a GNS530, but I wouldnt benefit much from mad GNS530 skills if my real GPS was a different unit.. My own would likely be one of those garmin handhelds instead.Tuomas

Les,Do you know the hieght and width (not diagonal) size of these units? I need to make sure it would fit in the space I have. Thanks -Mitch

Hi Mitch, here are the dimensions direct from website 194x122x26(mm).All details i have are what are posted in thae above link.My one should arrive in a couple of days. Can give more details then if you need.Just ask.Les

Thanks Les....I don't mean to sound thick as a brick, but are these the actual dimensions of the screen itself or of the whole unit including the frame. Any unit I end up with will be removed from the frame and mounted directly to the back of my panel for GPS and PFD/ND, so I am looking for three. I believe the PFD and ND are 8" displays in real life, but there doesn't seem to be such a thing out there right now (that I can find, anyway!).Thanks again, and I apologize for the endless questions.-Mitch

hi Mitch,Youre not thick,i have similar problems trying to work out what some adverts really mean.I think those dimensions are of the completemonitor and not the screen. They advertise the monitor as a 7" one.You could email them, the auction closes in a few hours, but they have been selling these for the last month. The last price was $289.I have not seen my one yet.No problems about asking questions, thats what these fgorums are all about,HELPING each other to enjoy this hobby. So if you have any more questions just fire away.Les

It's pretty much the same PFD/ND that is being used in King Airs, MD80s and other "not so big jets" and those are *normal gauges* but done with vector graphics and they are very nice and smooth (they have a demo version for testing)http://www.reality-xp.com/products/JL2/nr/...2-eadi-zoom.gifhttp://www.reality-xp.com/products/JL2/nr/...2-efis-zoom.gifThe advantage of them being gauges is that they do not use OpenGL, thus you should be able to use them in the PCI videocard if needed, and since they are normal gauges, you can just put them on a panel with the others.JetLine2 also comes with a Learjet -style radio tuner and I think they have a FMC in the works. (www.reality-xp.com for the google impaired :))Anyway, I wonder if it would be just easier to get going by putting a big TFT or flat CRT behind the captains panel and just making all instruments with FS gauges. The Jetline 2 solves the jumpiness problem of the artificial horizon/PFD that the default gauges suffer, but instead of having two small monitors for PFD and ND, you could simplify the setup a lot with one larger monitor for all. If course you decide how your stuff is done, but these were just my thoughts :)Following with big interest, most people are building a 777 or Airbus it seems and IMHO they all look the same, so this is a refreshing different project :)Tuomas

Hi Tuomas,I recently bought the XP reality jetLine 2 gauges, just for testing it.They are indeed very nice but they eat some frames and are not able to be ran as a standalone on a second computer as Magenta does.I remember having written to the XP reality guys some month ago asking them to make two versions: a xxx.gau version for direct integration in any bitmap panel and a xxx.exe version for cockpit builders.I never got a reply.RegardsRoger

My setup has just one computer and two videocards, so the gauge approach works fine for me. They might eat frames a bit but the movement is very smooth - and one does not need a second computer because they work in an old Matrox PCI card + monitor on the main computer. But if one wants multi-display with several computers, then Magenta is probably better, although it is "big jet" stuff. Because Jetline2 stuff are FS gauges, it offers other advantages to the people who dont want to maintain a network of PC's but rather just use one and two or three monitors (one for visual, rest for instrument panels)It's just an alternative approach - I rather keep the computer department simple and want to avoid maintaining several windows computers, one is enough :)Tuomas

Tuomas,I'm sure you mean WideFS...At any rate, a full monitor is not an option for me as I am using real gauges... no room! So I need to have something runs stand-alone. I already own just about everything that Project Magenta ever published, so I am using those applications. Thanks :)-Mitch

>Tuomas,>>I'm sure you mean WideFS...Ah yea, or wideview too - a home cockpit can be done with one computer and two videocards (or one dualhead) as well. Of course you cannot have everything then, but it's all about the purpose of the thing, something like the AlSim AL-100 is probably a very nice flight training device, and making a similar one yourself is not *that* hard with FS2004, maybe FSBUS and lots of free time :)http://www.alsim.com/Site/Product_Range/AL...AL100-2_Big.jpg(http://www.alsim.com/ - the local aviation college purchased a sim from that company lately - those pics have good ideas, look at the radio stack in the photo! Clever placement on the edge of the second TFT with the knobs just off the monitor side! One can then have the actual radio frequency displays as custom gauges instead of 7-segments which is easier to do)>At any rate, a full monitor is not an option for me as I am>using real gauges... no room! And with Magenta you need two computers unless it's a directx9 dualhead videocard I guess.Anyway, simkits and stuff is very nice, and will for sure make the stuff look awesome.Keep us posted with photos :)Tuomas

That's the real beauty of this addiction - there are so many ways to implement it! :)
