October 28, 200322 yr Hi guys,My power adapter to my Compaq FP700 LCD monitor failed the other day and finally I managed to get hold of a site that carried the spare part, www.ambry.com. But look at the price!!!340934-001 Compaq Universal Power Adapter $210.00I can't believe it will cost as much as a new LCD monitor?!So, does any of you guys have some good schematics for a power adapter similar to this one? Specs are IN 100-240VDC 1A 50-60Hz, OUT +10VAV 2.5AThanks, Mats JohanssonPMDG Flight Test Dept | Asus Z270-A | Intel i5-7600K @ 4.8 GHz OC/H2O | nVidia Geforce GTX 1070 8GB OC/O2|
October 28, 200322 yr Geeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!That is theft!!!!!You can build your own regulated 3A rated power supply for under 20$ including the transformer! What's so special in the Compaq power adapter? Why would an LCD monitor require 2.5A of current??? Can you check that again?I found several schematics in the Net but you better search Yahoo (or any other similar) and you will get tons of sites with schematics.Just pick the best for you.On the theory side, the 2.5A is the only limit not to use an integrated regulator. The commonly used 78xx series can only handle up to 1A without the use of a power transistor. The most simple circuit would be a rectifying bridge, 3 capacitors, 1 transistor (2N3055 or similar), a zener diode, and 1 resistor.George DorkofikisAthens, Greece
October 28, 200322 yr Further to the above, I think this circuit is adequate for most operations. It's the simple PSU.http://www.aaroncake.net/circuits/supply2.htmGeorge DorkofikisAthens, Greece
October 28, 200322 yr Author Thanks for the replies George!I got curious of what could make it so expensive so I opened the box and found a bcp made by BESTEC a taiwanese low cost comopany. So my guess is I buy the black box saying Compaq for $200 and the power supply cicuit for $10. :-eek LOLAnyhow. While I had it taken apart I tried to measure around a bit. And to my amazement I found it giving 10V out. Putting everything together very causiously and now it's working alright... :-hmmmCheers, Mats JohanssonPMDG Flight Test Dept | Asus Z270-A | Intel i5-7600K @ 4.8 GHz OC/H2O | nVidia Geforce GTX 1070 8GB OC/O2|
October 29, 200322 yr That doesn't surprice me at all!For the cost you pay the brand name... Yikes!... $180+ for a name!As for it working after you took it apart and re-assembled it, it happened to me many times with various electronics!Sometimes a simple clean-up of the dust inside removes any shortcircuits. Also, without noticing, you may have tightened a loose contact (which may have been the cause anyway) by just taking it appart and re-assembling it. My first scan on such electronics is to carefully scan all connections for cold solder or broken solder. 99% of the time, tha'ts the cause. I have managed to salvage about 5 remote controls this way! A simple resolder did the trick and saved me (and relatives) or $10 for a new remote!Geee... I'm talking too much again.Glad it works now.George DorkofikisAthens, Greece
