April 13, 200521 yr Hi to allThanks to help I got here with CNC I am very satisfied with my first panel.I sanded the plexi and used the right primer now. Everything went well this time.Only thing I need to do before finishing this panel is filling in the characters with white drawing ink. http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/112778.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/112779.jpgRegardsNorbert
April 13, 200521 yr Wow those panels look good man, do you have pics of your CNC machine?? Take care.Roberto
April 13, 200521 yr Author ThanksYes I have one, look at:http://home.wanadoo.nl/norbert.boschthen click on panels on the left nav barNorbert
April 13, 200521 yr Was looking at it in your site very nice!! Had a CNC machine but just sold it like a month ago, This one is really neat, it is quite small... The one I had was really big, bought it to make MIP
April 14, 200521 yr Author In fact engraving is the same as cutting. I tel the software to enter the material 0,1 mm and make 1 pass. With cutting I tel the routwr bit to make 6 passes of 0,5 mm.RegardsNorbert
April 14, 200521 yr Wow, it looks great!I`m new here, so excuse me if I have missed something, but a few questions. How do you actually do? I have a cnc-machine, and want to give it a try. Do you use plexi, then paint it, and make the characters in the paint? And how do you fill the white ink in the characters with such sharpness? It really looks great.Regards, Jan
April 14, 200521 yr Hi NorbertIt just looks awesome. You might already have tried this but, why dont you paint a layer of white as a base, then paint the brown on top of that. Now you can engrave just down to the white paint, and avoid having to paint the letters by hand!just an idea.RegardsPeter Skotte
April 14, 200521 yr Author @Jan and PeterI use white plexi. Sand it, put white primer on it and then 2 layers boeing brown. With engraving I remove the paint. Backlighting is OK now. But in daylicht the contrast of the characters could be better.I learned from a fellow Dutch builder (he sent me pics of his work, it is not on a website) to fill in the characters with white drawing ink. It is quick drying ink, his results are remarkeble good. I will post later this day a pic I got from him to show what I mean. I did NOT do that yet. First need to buy it and to experiment with it.Engraving just into the white paint is nearly impossible. The thickness of the paintlayer is very small and not everywhere the same. RegardsNorbert
April 14, 200521 yr another idea would be to rub some paint on the letters, but not very carefull, then wipe of with a soft sponge the remaining paint. Do not press on the sponge. All paint outside of the engravings should be removed. This is not tested yet, but I think it should work
April 14, 200521 yr Author I think that is about the way to do it.Attached is a pic from a fellow dutch builder that told me this tric about the white ink. I will ask him in detail how he did it and post my results here. http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/112849.jpg
April 15, 200521 yr Hi Norbert,Great to see your up to this stage.I tried my first engraving last weekend, so I have a couple of questions for you. (I tried it on a clear backing panel I'd cut out, not the white translucent one, that's coming this weekend)Did you use spray paint or brush.Acrilyc paint or enamel. How did you get Boeing brown (Paint shop, make it up yourself etc). Why didn't you use Black primer as a mask?If you use the white paint method after you engrave, won't this block the light?Don't you love what you can do with Rams. (Thanks for pointing me in that direction)I'll post some pics when I have something to show as well.RegardsDavid
April 15, 200521 yr Wow... Amazing work by dutch simbuilder... What's his name does he has his own website? If so, that's great. I would love to see his work. David & Nobert I don't mean to pry in your finanical business, but asking you if you paid $500 worth of RamGold software?
