October 22, 200817 yr Hi, what are the pro's and cons's of using slide pot's. I have hacked two logitec rudder controls and notice the pots are very small, however the work fine everytime. I a have some panisonic 10k slide pots that only have one inch of travel, they are verywell made and work fine in the sim. I notice that most builders use pots wbout 4 inch. long.your comments please. thanks.
October 22, 200817 yr In some applications slide pots are easier to mechanically connect so that the wiper moves through its whole range. A shortcoming of slide pots is that their construction does not provide the same protection for the resistance element. Dust can get into the unit through the wiper lever slot. Dust shortens pot lifetime.Mikewww.mikesflightdeck.comwww.mikesflightdeckbooks.com
October 22, 200817 yr Author Hi Mike, thanks for your reply, I did turn the pot upside down, How about the size?. Thanks.
October 22, 200817 yr Mechanical linkages have a (hopefully) small amount of looseness or play in them. With a physically larger slide pot this play is a smaller percentage of the overall wiper movement. So a larger pot can result in more positioning precision. That said, I think with good mechanical design (perhaps using a spring to preload the mechanical play) this can have very small impact.Mikewww.mikesflightdeck.comwww.mikesflightdeckbooks.com
October 23, 200817 yr Author Hi Mike, thanks for your reply, the spring is a good idea, I used drills as close as possible to try and keep any slop down to a min. see pic. this is my test bed so to say.
