What O/S should I choose

Featured Replies

I am considering a system built by ProGress Systems Inc [see related post], and am curious about which O/S to install. These are the proposed system specs:Intel 2.53GHz / 533Bus Abit BD7 II RAID / 1 AGP, 5PCI, ATA133 / 1024MB PC2700 DDR / ATI 9700 Pro 128MB / 120GB 7200 RPM IBM hard driveOnboard LAN / SoundBlaster Audigy Gamer / Lite-On 52x24x52 CD-RW / Lite On 16X DVD / 3COM 56 V.92 hardware modem / Raidmax Exonic Window case & light / 320Watt power supply 2 fans / Keyboard / Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 1.44MB floppy / Altec Lansing 5 piece speaker set I have been a Windows 98 user for several years and it is very stable. Cheryl at ProGress has offered to install Win98, but I am concerned that: with the system specs above; plus the thought down the road to network up to 3 PC's for a multi-monitor set-up; and finally the fact that Windows 98 may not be supported by peripheral manufacturers [read Video Card manufacturers forever] that I'd be better of with XP Home or Professional.Need your thoughts. Thanks, Rick

You are going to get a 1001 to this. You got some wrong information from ProGress. Windows98 will not support over 512MB or ram, so half of your ram will be wasted. If you use your PC for things other than flight simming, and plan to upgrade any software like Office, Office 11 will not run on Windows 98.I currently run Windows 2000 Pro, and have no problems what so ever.

Hello Rick!Nice system partner! Hope you enjoy it and get the performance you expect out of it.Two things:1. Stick to XP Professional Edition all the way. 2. If you can get your hands on the latest Nvidia GeForce-4 Ti, I encourage it. I'm not sure about the ATI card.Hope this helps!Sincerely,Dennis D. DOH! you're right on the Windows 98. I really don't recommend it for stability reasons but very true on the memory. I haven't experencied that limitation personally (that's whay I forgot) so I stand corrected. But yes MS is retiring 98 and Windows 2000 soon to follow it seems. Which stink cuz I love 2000 and don't want the regsistration hassles of Xp since I swap parts like no tomorrow.I run Windows 2000Pro and love it. The only downfall to XP is the BigBrother nature to it. You are allowed 6 hardware changes within 6 months or else you have to re-register with MS.Dennis the ATI 9700 Pro is the best card on the market, Nvidia has been de-throned for now. I must say I still do love Nvidia's drivers over ATI's.
