June 25, 200223 yr I still tuning my new computer, and have both Win XP and 98SE installed.I find that I get a higher "benchmark" score on 98 than I do on XP, 38fps vs 35fps (Meigs, all settings max, unlimited frame rate, no AI traffic). Is this normal, and does XP have a higher overhead? I have yet to try some XP tweaks, some of which I note are supposed to provideadditional resources. I also have NAV running on XP, but not on 98SE, as it has no internet connection nor e-mail.Thanks,Bruce.PIV 1.8G, 512 DDR (PC-2100), GeForce 4 Ti200. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.

To that, I would say, yes, XP does have more overhead. But in my observation, this is not bad. XP's memory management is far superior to 9x. It can gracefully address 4gb vs. the 512mb limit of 9x (16gb for you 64bit XP dudes and dudettes!) It is far more stable, and in my opinion, if you take into account all the bennies, such as NTFS, no 16-bit overhead, etc the end result is a faster, not slower machine. Even on FS2002, I think the overall experience with a properly set up XP box ( shades of my .inf and drivers issues :) ) you'll find the simulation responds, updates and flys smoother, even at the slightly lower FR.My observations, YMMV.Cheers,bt
June 25, 200223 yr Author Thanks Braun,I'm interested in tne 512M memmory limit for 9x. (I always thought that this was a BX board limitation, not the OS, however I must admit I don't know much about it).I do plan to upgrade my 512M to at least 1G of DDR. Does win9x slow down greatly, or what actually is the effect of surpassing this limit?BTW, I agree with your comemns on the assets of XP. Once you get it installed OK (now, that's another story!), it works great! Thanks,Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.

Well, it CAN handle more than 512mb, actually up to 2GB, but remember...I said gracefully :)http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar...s/q253/9/12.asphttp://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar...s/Q304/9/43.ASPhttp://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar...s/Q296/7/73.ASPCheers,bt
