Which GeForce 4 card?

Featured Replies

I am currently considering upgrading my GeForce2 GTS 64MB card to A GeForce4 128 MB card. Can someone tell me if the difference between the GF4 4200 and the GF4 4600 is worth the considerable price difference ($100 CDN)? From the specs I can't see a huge difference but perhaps experienced users can advise me... ThanksASUS A7V333 MBO512 MB DDR RAM PC 2700Athlon XP 2000+John-PaulToronto

Hi John-Paul,Looking at your setup now, I can't see you gaining any noticable performance by using a Ti4600 over a Ti4200. Save yourself the extra money and get the Ti4200. :)

Agreed...my Geforce3 ran just fine, except...scenery stutter, object saturation, and fuzzy textures. When I cranked it up, 64 mb could not keep up...not and have 100 mile settings, etc. FWIW, as a pilot, and an Air Traffic Controller (Trained "Limited Weather Observer") FSUIPC puts just the right amount of haze for real world, with 100 miles vis scenery vis. Look at my post in the FS2000 forum with the screenies. Perfect blend of distance and haze. Smudged scenery in the distance too, "as real as it gets", but folks who have never flown or bothered to look while flying fail to see that as real. OTOH, the smeared textures close up are a "bug"??? of FS2002/DX *.x, a total bummer, and I am happy to report are completely gone in my now correctly setup P4 Northwood/XP box.DX 8.1 must know how to allocate that frame buffer, because you must have 8.1 to install 128 meg card. Ran across that with both a 4600 and a 4200. (I use gobs of Nvidia professionally...they rock)Frame buffer is life.Best,bt

John-Paul,The 4200 is generally considered the best buy for the money. I have seen this from reputable reviewers such as www.anandtech.com.I am planning on purchasing this card myself in the next few weeks. You can find a Gainward 128mb card for about $165 (including shipping) from pricewatch.Allen

Hey, thanks for the info! I think I will go for the 4200 with 128MB memory. However, I am in Toronto and ordering from US based companies proves to end up being more of a headache than anything. The best prices I have found for the three cards here are:4200 $292 CDN *all are 128 MB ASUS cards4400 $392 CDN4600 $489 CDN$292 CDN works out to about $180 USD so it probably isn't worth going across borderJohn-Paul
