Need Advice on A New System

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, I've decided that I'm going to build my new computer myself and I need advice on what type of parts to get. I've already decided that for now I'm going to keep my current case, CD-ROM, CD-RW, 3.5" floppy, sound card, and modem in order to save some money. I'll gradually update them when I've got the money. At this point I've pretty much decided that I want an AMD processor, at least the XP 1900+ as well as Crucial or Corsair PC2100 DDR memory. I need advice on a stable, reasonably priced, middle of the road motherboard and a 128 MB graphics card. A new hard drive is also on my priority list and I need advice on what brand to purchase. Thanks to anyone with even a little advice for me. Tim K.

Hi Tim,You can buy an EPoX KT333 chipset motherboard that supports both PC2100 and PC2700 DDR and the AMD XP+ Processor. In terms of price compared to brands such as Asus and Abit, it's much cheaper. Around $80US.As for a graphics card, I'd suggest buying a GF4 Ti4200 with 128MB of onboard memory. They can be purchased for around $150+Good luck :)

Tim - I can't help much with the motherboard question but I certainly agree with John T. about the Ti4200. It would be a really good choice. For the HDD I'd look at 7200 RPM Western Digitals. I've used WD's for years and never had a problem of any sort. And don't forget to put your old HDD in the new case - it'll be great for backups. You didn't mention it but you may want to check your power supply. If the one you have now is less that 300 watts or is a 300W "cheapo" you might want to give serious consideration to a new one (300W or more). Antec or Enermax are good brands.TripNorthwood 2.2a at 2.72Ghz Abit TH7II-R512MB Samsung 40ns PC800Gainward GF4 64MB Ti4200 295/57029.42's DX8.1 WinXP ProInwin case / Enermax 431W PSU3DMark2001SE = 11911http://service.madonion.com/compare?2k1=4001228
