July 30, 200223 yr I had probs with WINXP and accidentally formatted my disc to NTFS. I would like to try going back to WINME to try and see if it is more stable.Anyone any ideas how to reformat my HDD back to FAT32.I have read that u cannot do this.
July 30, 200223 yr What you can do is take a Win Me boot disk, go into dos, run "fdisk" from the flopy, and you will see the menu.Even though the fdisk cannot recognize the NTFS you can still delete the partition and you can format it to FAT.But of crouse you'll loose all the data.Thats they fastest way that comes to my mind. You might wanna wait to see what others will say.
July 30, 200223 yr I've never used it, but I believe that Partition Magic will convert between FAT and NTFS without having to reformat and lose data.Dan
July 31, 200223 yr Hello,You want to run a debug script to do a low level format of the hard drive. Boot off a WIN9X boot disk and follow below:Boot to Win98SE startup disk (It is the best OS made boot disk ever). Type in debug at the A: prompt. Enter in the following commands:Blue: what you type in.Pink: what is displayed on the screen. (DO NOT TYPE THIS IN!)Black: this is useful information. (DO NOT TYPE THIS IN!)-F 220 L1000 0 (ENTER)-A CS: 100 (ENTER)xxxx:0100 MOV AX,301 (ENTER)xxxx:0103 MOV BX,200 (ENTER)xxxx:0106 MOV CX,1 (ENTER)xxxx:0109 MOV DX,80 (ENTER) <---"80" for hd1, "81" for hd2 >xxxx:010C INT 13 (ENTER)xxxx:010E INT 20 (ENTER)xxxx:0110 (ENTER) <-------BLANK LINE "VERY IMPORTANT" >-G (ENTER)Program terminated normally- (CTRL)-(ALT)-(DEL) to reboot systemThis will remove all your partions. So you can now run FDISK and repartition to use FAT32Regards,StephenAMD 1600XP @ 1800XP 1.50 (10.5 X 143)EPOX 8KHA+ VIA KT266A 1GB INFINEON PC2100 DDR (2x512)TNT2 32MB(to be upgarded soon)IBM 60GB ATA100 7,200RPMQuantum 20GB 5,400RPMSB LIVE 512V350 Watt PSUWINDOWS XP PROGood judgment comes from experience, experience comes from bad judgement.
July 31, 200223 yr He doesn't need low level format and waste his time, he just needs to delete NTFS partition and make FAT one.(For info, low level format can take up to and over 24 hours)
August 1, 200223 yr Hi georgi55,A low level format using the debug script take 5 Mins. Bursco is going from an NTFS WINXP partition to a FAT32 WINME partition. FDISK will not remove the NTFS partitions. So I would advise running the debug script if you want to get rid of any NTFS partitions quickly and effectively.Regards,StephenAMD 1600XP @ 1800XP 1.50 (10.5 X 143)EPOX 8KHA+ VIA KT266A 1GB INFINEON PC2100 DDR (2x512)TNT2 32MB(to be upgarded soon)IBM 60GB ATA100 7,200RPMQuantum 20GB 5,400RPMSB LIVE 512V350 Watt PSUWINDOWS XP PROGood judgment comes from experience, experience comes from bad judgement.
August 4, 200223 yr FDISK will remove NTFS partitions, what it will not do is remove NTFS logical drives from within an extended partition, it just reports "no logical drives present" even though the disk info states that there ARE logical drives.Solution? don't use the XP text-mode installer to create any partitions other than the one you want to install NT/2K/XP on. Then create any additional NTFS partitions as Primaries using the Disk management snap-in.Partition Magic is the only non-destructive way of going back to FAT32 but is not worth it in this case.Surely the best solution is to find out WHY there were problems with XP rather than discuss the easiest method of going back to ME?ME=CFS=Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I rest my case :)Best regards//Neil
