Video Card Suggestions

Featured Replies

Greetings,I am looking into purchasing a new dual head video card. There are so many cards on the market, and I want to make sure I buy the right one.I was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to advise me on which card is currently optimal for use with FS2002. A fair balance between price and performance would be best for me.My system specs are:AMD Athlon 1.3 GHz ProcessorEMD K7S5A MB256 MB DDR RAMAny help would be greatly appreciated.Regards,Chris BrunnerCYVR

For that system, there are 3 choices that I would suggest.GF4 Ti4200 for $150, or GF4 TI4400 for $200. Ti4200 is good card, but with $50 mroe you can get 2nd fastest GeForce card in market. If you have long patientce, you could wait till Xmas and get GF4 Ti4600 because NV30 - the new Nvidia cards will be out by then and GF4 prices will be really low.If you are planing to use it only for FS2002 or buying the card focused on FS2002, then GF3 for below $100 will do the job.I havent noticed any difference when I tried my friend's GF3, and when Im using my GF4 TI4400 except if you want to run 4xS AA at resolution higher than 1280*960.Oh - and another difference between GF4 Ti and GF3 is that you can hook up 2 monitors on one card when using GF4 TI.DO NOT buy GF4 MX cards - as they have MANY issues with FS2002 and will take you forever to tweak it so it works. (and that is if you were successful to tweak it.)GF4 MX cards are also almost same price as GF3 so if you are goign to spend below $100, get GF3.

Georgi,I've always wondered how to hook multiple VGA monitors to a card like this. Do you have to have a Standard VGA and an LCD to accomplish this, or do you specifically have to look for a 4200/4400 that has dual DB15 pin ports?TIA, - Tom

I also am looking to upgrade my GeForce 2 MX 400 card (AMD XP1800, 512 Ram--my current 3D Mark 2001SE score is a lowly 2820), and also debating 4200 vs 4400 now or later when prices drop further.Need a couple of price/quality checks if you would be so kind:1) Costco.com has an XFX GeForce4 Ti4200 for $145.99 (+$6 shipping)which is as low as I've seen the 4200. But I've never heard of "XFX" before. Is this an ok card?2) A week or so ago I saw the Ti4400 at CompUSA.com for $199.99 after rebates, but now when I visit their site the price is back to $299--no rebate. Where do you recommend getting the 4400 currently for $199, and which brand? Thanks for your help.Steve J.

You buy a DVI to VGA adapter - or check before you buy the card becayse many of cards will include it when you buy it,but some won't.It should be below $15 even you order it online.

I suggest you to use http://www.pricewatch.com/, thats where I found the TI4400 for 199 2 weeks ago.I bought mine from www.gameve.com, but looks like they are not selling it anymroe.(It was eVGA GF4 TI4400 and had VIVO too (Video In, Video Out)

Thanks, Georgi. I also googled XFX (turns out its a new Div of Pine) and found several reviews giving top-notch ratings to the XFX Ti-4200, including its quality and ability to overclock. So I'll continue to look for 4400 bargains, but $150 for the XFX Ti-4200 is looking good to me right now. Thanks again. Steve J.

If you are going for below $150, go to this link. I liked this comapny's service, and would recomend it.http://www.gameve.com/store/gameve_listCat...p?idCategory=13They got AOPEN GEFORCE4 TI4200 128MB TV-OUT for $140.95 and look at other companies' cards too.

Thanks a lot for the advice. It looks like I wll most likely be going with the GF4 Ti4400. You mentioned that you can hook up 2 monitors. I don't quite understand...is this a dual head card, or is there some other metod of connecting dual monitors?I also had another question. What card manufacturer do you recommend? i.e. Asus, ATI, MSI, etc. Thanks again for the help. It is very much appreciated.Regards,Chris BrunnerCYVR

As post #4 above, You buy a DVI to VGA adapter,or check before you buy the card becayse many of cards will include it when you buy it, but some won't.It should be below $15 even you order it online.Take a look at the screenshot I attached. The white one is DVI conenctor, the blue is the common VGA connector.DVI to VGA adapter converts the white conenctor to act as same as blue one.You can find good deal here.http://www.techdepot.com/product.asp?produ...=118602&iid=939It looks like this: http://cache.techdepot.com/comassets/produ...CNET/I74021.jpgI will recomend eVGA cause thats the one I have and it's simply awesome.Too bad www.gameve.com doesnt have it anymore, but you can find other good deals on www.pricewatch.comI say go with MSI since there are no god deals on eVGA anymore, but dont count me on that.I dont know how good MSI cards are, but in general they are really good compnay and make really good mother boards.http://www.gameve.com/store/gameve_viewite...p?idproduct=464

Great! Thank you very much Georgi. I wasn't aware that you could use dual monitors by simply getting a converter. That will save a lot of trouble. Thanks again!Chris BrunnerCYVR

You're welcome. :)Please update me when you buy it. ;)

Hi Georgi!Well, I finally went out and bought the card. I went with the GF4 Ti4400. Absolutely incredible! Excellent frame rates, excellent quality, and excellent support for dual displays. Thanks again very much for the help and suggestions :-wave.Which drivers do you use with your card? I was inclined to download the up-to-date NVidia driver package versus the MSI drivers included with the card because the NVidia drivers were, well, up-to-date. However, I noticed that there are some features not present with the NVidia drivers, such as the clone monitors function.Best regards,Chris BrunnerCYVR

nice, eh? 4xS Anti Alaising makes everythign smooth too.I use 30.82. 40.41 are out but they are full wiht bugs. 30.82 gives me all the features that card offers including clone too.I suggest you to use the 30.82 drivers.

I am using the 30.82 drivers, but I don't have the clone funtion. Where do you find that?I think the Anti-Aliasing is a very nice feature, but not worth the 15-20 fps hit.Regards,Chris BrunnerCYVR
