October 9, 200223 yr I'm having serious trouble installing a new PNY GeForce4 Ti4200 64mb AGP graphics card.My system:Windows XPMSI motherboard: 815EPT (MS-6337) (intel 815 chipset) Socket 370PIII 1ghz512mb RAM 133I currently have a GeForce2 mx400 64mb card and it works very well. The Detonator drivers I am using are the latest from the nVidia site. After uninstalling the GeForce2 and close the system, the reboot with the new card is fine before installing drivers. Then I re-install the drivers for the Geforce4. Everything is cool and I reboot... but then the system locks up. It locks just before the XP welcome screen with either a totally black screen (or after a scandisk with a screen corruption), which I assume is the first point during boot that the screen resolution and refresh rate is implemented. After about 1 minute, the system reboots itself.Windows Safe Mode then doesn't seem to work. So the only way to get my sytem up and running again is to replace the new GeForce4 with the old GeForce2 card and then everything springs back to normal again.I have returned the card and swapped it at the shop in case it was faulty, but I get the same problem, so I know it's not a problem with the graphics card itself. The confusing thing is that both cards use the Detonator Drivers, so I assume it's not a driver issue.I have uninstalled WindowsXP SP1 and that didn't make any difference. Can anyone advise me on how I am supposed to get this damn card working? Is it a m/b compatibility issue? BIOS? Windows XP re-install (aaaargh!) I have run out of ideas on this one.I need a clever person. :)Thanks in advance, Simon
October 9, 200223 yr hmm odd. I can't see why there would be a problem, both cards use the same drivers. hmmm. One option you may wish to try is a repair. You're familiar with how to run this? If you're not, you change your system to boot to the CD, run through as if you were installing XP again and there will be a repair option. You may want to give that a go :) Cheers,John TavendaleTextures by Tavers - https://www.facebook.com/texturesbytavers
October 9, 200223 yr Thanks, John.I'll keep that in mind as an option. I diodn't realise I could do a repair straight from the XP CD!Does anyone else have any ideas about what might be causing the lockup? I'm kinda worried that I've wasted a shedload of cash on this.Simon.
October 9, 200223 yr you might want to try and update your BIOS to the latest version. They may have made some updates and added GF4 compatability Cheers,John TavendaleTextures by Tavers - https://www.facebook.com/texturesbytavers
October 11, 200223 yr Yep.. I just tried that but it didn't help... apart from I now have 300,000,000 BIOS settings now! ;) Heheh.I have Re-installed Windows. And that didn't make the slightest bit of difference either. Eeeeeek!I can't think of anything else... apart from disconnect absolutely everything... CD drives, PCI cards, etc etc etc... and see if it is some kind of device conflict. If not, I guess it's time to upgrade my PC.I quite fancy the look of a new AthlonXP 2000+ and a MSI motherboard anyway. Nice... and If I trade in my old PentiumIII I could get them, and a 512mb memory for about
October 31, 200223 yr I havin the same sort problem with a Gainwood 750/XP GF4 board...This is the problem. My computer doesn't reconise it. I have installed the board as recommended, rebooted Windows XP and follow the instructions for installing new hardware. All I get is a message saying there is a problem, and the hardware may not work. I then get into a never ending loop asking me to install the drivers. I have checked all the connections, and uninstalled all previous GF drivers (I'm using a GF3 now which fires up and installs drivers first time). I'm at a loss to find the problem.I've also looked around the Gainward site, and tried to install their recommended drivers....no joyMy system is as followsP4 2.0Ghz (not a northwood)512Mb DRAMGA-8TX Mobo.(lastest Bios)Windows XP - with SP1detonator 41.03 driversThe rest is standard stuff, SB Live etc and the system is not overclocked...I just can't work it out...I've just order a P4 2.5 system..so its no great shakes..but I'd like to get it working before handing this system off for my kids to use.
October 31, 200223 yr Sounds like another odd situation. I can't think of a remedy for it. I guess there are just some setups that don't work together. That's the only conclusion I can draw. I've given up on mine. It's sitting in a box on top of a wardrobe collecting dust. I don't know whether to keep hold of it or get a refund on it. I want to upgrade my system, but with Christmas looming and some big bills to pay, I think that might not be until January. Not sure what to do really. I hate taking good stuff back.PCs, eh? Sheeeesh! ;)Simon.
November 22, 200223 yr Having the same problem except I installed a new MB and processor. Works great with my old GeForce 2 Ultra, but freezes up with the GeForce 4 TI4200. I'm taking it to the computer store this weekend. I believe my problem comes from the fact that my chipset drivers were VIA and my board uses SIS. These drivers must be changed. I'm not going to #$#^% with it. I will post my findings when I return from the computer store. I don't know if it will help, but it may serve as a lead anyway.Adam
November 23, 200223 yr I upgraded from a Pentium 3-833 With Matrox G400 Millenium Graphics & 512mbRam operating Win98se, to an AMD XP2100+(512mb Ram) operating Win2k pro.At first I kept my Matrox card but was getting lockups which were attributed to the card, so I upgraded to a Geforce T14600.both the motherboard & the Graphics card are MSI and I've tried every combination of drivers I can but FS2002 still locks up whenever there is a big graphics load due to lots of AI aircraft coming into view(i.e. overflying a busy airport and panning the view down, or on approach to a busy airport with added AI aircraft. My old system would slow down to 1 or 2 fps but plod on at this rate, the new one locks up with frame rates as high as 9 or 10 fps. It's either a problem with the VIA drivers or the motherboard / processor, as it happens whichever graphics card I use. I have Win98se installed on a separate partition & tried installing FS2002 in win98, It seems more stable in win98 with older drivers which came with the motherboard, but it's about 6fps slower in all situations.under clocking from 133 to 100mhz also seems to help.( but of course affects performance.)Can I have my old system back please ?Aidan (EGNV):-fume
November 24, 200223 yr Just today I talked to a techy at the store where I bought all the hardware and he told me that some of the MSI boards (I have the 648 MAX) will not work with GeForce4 cards with the existing BIOS. HMMM.... I don't recall them mentioning that when I bought the stuff. :-roll I live 4 hours away from the computer store. My GeForce4 TI4200 is also MSI. I'm just not up to doing a lot of playing with system settings. You did install the updated BIOS and it didn't work, right? I'm taking my stuff back and the techies can get it working for me!AdamP.S. Did you get yours working properly yet?
November 24, 200223 yr I've flashed the BIOS using the MSI live update facility,(against the advice of the friend who built my system) & tried the VIA 4 in 1 drivers - version 4.38(which came with the board)& 4.42 & 4.43 which I downloaded. I've tried the Nvidia 30.82 & 40.72 graphics drivers (the 40.72 gives a big frame improvement) but it's still locking up.There's something in the sim it doesn't like - I guess I'll have to turn the AI traffic off !I was on approach to Heathrow this morning at 15% AI - (maybe 20-25 aircraft on the ground) and getting a steady 9-10 fps when it locked up about 4 miles out (the terminal had been in view for over 30 seconds - I couldn't see the planes but they would have loaded) I did notice that the radio had "gone quiet" as I hadn't been handed off by London City following my ILS clearance.- Next thing is to try the latest audio drivers or a separate sound card- (the KT3 Ultra 2 has an onboard sound card)I wonder if using "editvoicepack" to add airline names has corrupted the USenglishbig.vcp file somehow. Going Mad !:-grnmd Aidan (EGNV)
November 24, 200223 yr Does anyone know if a Geforce 2 GTS 32MB video card would work on my system? My system: AMD Duron 954MHz, 128MB RAM, Biostar VKB Mainboard, Via VT8363x chipset. Please if anyone can give me advice it would be helpful. Also, would FS 2002 lock up or something? In reply to the Geforce 4 problem, I think it has bugs in it. Maybe you should get a Geforce 3. Hope that helps. Thanks. Asad
November 24, 200223 yr I cured the lockups By reducing the CPU FSB speed from 133MHz to 122MHz (underclocking)using the BIOS setup program Frequency/Voltage control page.(I may try to creep up towards 133 again in stages).I'm still getting good frame rates(locked at 30fps)except at busy airports where there is a small performance hit.Aidan (EGNV) :-)
November 25, 200223 yr Thanks for the updates on your system. It certainly sounds like a MB compatibility thing then? But then underclocking the BUS speed? Hmmm.Well... my system update is this: I gave up. The card is still in it's box on top of a wardrobe. Sounds crazy, but I planned to build a new PC over the last couple of months. Unfortunately, I got hit wiht a couple of outrageous bills to pay and so I still have my trusty old setup here. I'm hoping to upgarde this month.Do you think I should avoid the MSI motherboards then? I'm planning on switching from Pentium to AthlonXP. It makes financial sense at the moment and the Athlons seem to be more inexpensive to upgrade in the future. When I get a little time, I'll try your underclocking method. Thanks for the tips and the info!!!!Cheers,Simon.
November 26, 200223 yr The friend who built my system always used to say go for the Pentium because their quality meant fewer problems (& FS2002 is "optimised" for Pentiums) but due to the price & performance he says it now makes sense to go for the AMD Athlon processors, in fact his own system is basically the same as mine. His system is An Athlon XP2100+ & GeForce Ti4200 64mb (all MSI- who he likes)plus loads of RAM . I went for the 128mb Ti4600 because they stopped making the 4400's.He had no problems with his system and it was after swapping his graphics card for my old one as a test that I decided to upgrade. He installed combat flight sim 3 on his machine the other day & guess what... it locked up ! so I think there must be some problem with the motherboard, VIA drivers or the chip itself - I thought they might be running at their limit at the rated values & don't like the way flightsims suddenly need to load a lot of textures, but as you're running yours on a Pentium chip it's more likely the board/drivers than the chip.it might be a case of wait & see, but you would think that if it was a major problem more people would be posting queries.Aidan ;)
